As well, it pays tribute to this historic city on the Mediterranean Sea, while honoring Ulysse Nardin's nautical legacy in high horology. Since 1846, Ulysse Nardin has been expertly steering captains and their crews with faultless precision by way of its marine chronometers.

As the latest addition to the coveted Marine Diver collection, the Monaco 2010 – limited to 100 pieces and individually numbered - showcases Ulysse Nardin's evolution in watchmaking technology, beginning with the Monaco's specially treated stainless-steel case. Having undergone a complex vulcanization process, the case (45.8 millimeters in diameter) is revealed with a matte-black rubber coating, presenting a sporty aesthetic and comfortable feel. Its exhibition case-back reveals a self-winding movement.

Softening its styling is a calming elegance that washes over this watch in the form of a signature wave pattern decorating the black, structured strap and dial with its power-reserve indicator and the oversized small-seconds register. As well, it is water-resistant to 200 meters. Strengthening its already exceptional reliability is the Monaco's rubber band including ceramic components and an exclusive black ceramic folding clasp.

For the second year, Ulysse Nardin is an official sponsor of the Monaco Yacht Show. Therefore, it's only fitting that the largest superyacht exhibition in the world be honored with a custom-designed timepiece to commemorate the celebration of its 20-year history. The splashes of red 'n' yellow make a bold statement against the backdrop of a rugged black rubberized case and black wave-pattern dial, the prefferd look for Nardin divers.

The steel case, which measure 45.8mm is fitted with a Sapphire Crystal and a unidirectonal rotaional divers bezel with elapsed dive-time scale, wave-pattern and 12hr marker in red or yellow.

Also in red or yellow is the Black Seas's 42 hours power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock and sub-seconds at 6 o'clock, which are powered by a Ulysse Nardin's Manufacture self-winding movement.

An exhibition caseeback affords a lovely view of the movement with its black rotor. The watch is presented on a black rubber divers strap with ceramic elements. Once again we see the famous UN wave-pattern. A striking look for summer!

From UN Ulysse Nardin honors its nautical history and the ocean’s majestic creatures with the new Hammerhead Shark Limited-Edition. As the hammerhead shark has navigated the oceans with unrivaled precision for centuries, Ulysse Nardin’s marine chronometers have steered sailors faultlessly to port. Once again, the famed watchmaker pays homage to its seafaring past and the ocean’s magnificent beings with the latest addition to its coveted Marine Collection – the Hammerhead Shark.

Sporty, rugged and water-resistant to 200 meters, this exceptional timepiece features a 45-millimeter, skin-friendly, high-grade polished titanium case (individually numbered). Engravings of the mysterious hammerhead shark decorate the case, with the pattern of its one-of-a-kind form continuing delicately onto an eye-catching blue dial that supports applied luminous indexes. Shielding the dial is a sapphire crystal cover encircled by a unidirectional, rotating bezel in either 18-karat rose-gold or stainless steel.

Complementing both the dial and the blue-structured bezel is a specially created blue rubber strap with rose-gold or titanium elements. ULYSSE NARDIN & OCEARCH [shark conservation]

Ulysse Nardin has well and truly got its teeth stuck into shark conservation with its latest partnership.

The Swiss brand has dived headfirst into shark research with the leading scientific shark conservation non-profit OCEARCH.

UN plan to continue their commitment to support marine research by teaming up with Ocearch, a data and scientific driven organization that works collaboratively with researchers and educational institutions to better understand the movement and habits of sharks.

With UN’s deep ocean roots, which are often symbolized by majestic shark icons on their diver’s models, it seemed only natural for them to partner with the organization leading the change in shark research and conservation.

Ulysse Nardin, rightly believe that it is their social responsibility to raise awareness for work like that of Ocearch ’s mission, which is driven by innovation, shark science and conservation.

Ocearch btw was one of the first research groups to safely catch and release live sharks using new and innovative methods for scientific studies. These guys are badass, they are living dream!

Ocearch’s urgent mission is to accelerate the ocean’s return to balance and abundance through fearless innovation in scientific research, education, outreach, and policy, using unique collaborations of individuals and organizations in the U.S. and abroad.

Their goal is to assist researchers in their work and provide invaluable resources to better understand the shark’s role as apex predator in the ocean’s fragile ecosystem.

The art of watching a shark’s migratory movement and the science behind their effect on marine life has been mastered by the Ocearch team.

Their hard-work and dedication to the understanding of sharks soon caught the attention of Ulysse Nardin and so the new partnership was quickly formed.

Ocearch’s passion and their commitment to the shark species plus UN’s cash and platform through bloggers and the like can hopefully make positive impact as it is our collective duty as ocean/shark lovers to save the shark species and therein help balance the ocean’s delicate ecosystem.

Similarly like the balance wheel of a mechanical movement, sharks are the balance keepers of our ocean’s ecosystems.
As the balance keepers, sharks are responsible for acting as the sea’s equilibrium by regulating the cycle of life deep below the surface.

Many marine species are difficult to study because components of their lifecycles occur solely or partially outside of the observable realm of researchers, making the studies completed by Ocearch vital to our understanding of the sea and debunking sharks as a villain.

Timekeeping is essential to maintaining an understanding of the conditions of each animal Ocearch captures studies and releases.

During Ocearch expeditions, the moment they engage with an animal time is captured and recorded.
Sharks enter a specialized lift on the side of the ship, then the science team has just 15 minutes to conduct 20 different research projects.

Throughout the years, Ulysse Nardin has created several timepieces that pay homage to different shark species in celebration of the brand’s close connection to the world’s oceans, making the partnership with Ocearch all the more natural.

The latest entries are two Limited Editions: The Diver Chronograph HAMMERHEAD Shark and the Lady Diver GREAT WHITE.

The Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark 44mm is a Limited Edition of 300 pieces while the Lady Diver Great White 39mm is Limited Edition of 300 pieces.

ULYSSE NARDIN Diver 42MM [a new beginning]

Founded in 1846, Ulyssee Nardin is brand that I have admired from afar for a good decade; they are a brand with a rich nautical heritage as well as being a true Swiss manufacture, producing all their own movements, cases, and watch components, in-house. Some say they are so fastidious that they even manufacture their own screws and fixings.

Their designs are unique, baring their own DNA along with a strong brand identity. However for some their designs which are largely modern (as far as dive watches are concerned), could be considered a little over-deigned and perhaps lacking any lasting appeal.

UN who were taken over by the Kering group in 2014 did not really answer this question until 2017, when they released what was their first vintage-styled diver, the Diver LE LOCLE, which no doubt helped them garner a whole new following. The watch was a good step in the right direction; however imo it could have done with a tad more WR.

At the beginning of this year, UN were back on form with another over-designed offering in the form of the HAMMERHEAD, a true Titanium diving instrument that couldn’t be more off-trend if it tried. I loved it, but I think it left many scratching their heads.

Just recently UN surprised us with a whole new diving collection, the Diver CHRONOMETER collection of four, delivered with three distinct looks – all them very UN-like in their appearance but perhaps a little more muted than the Hammerhead had been.

Today Ulysse Nardin have hit back once again with another brand-new dive watch collection that promises to finally position themselves against some those brands such as Breitling, Omega or Tudor who have been dominating this segment for so many years.

Introducing, the NEW Diver 42MM. Slim and sleek on the wrist, it still has UN’s signature modern flare however, it is even more sober than the Diver Chronometer was but more importantly it has been positioned as UN’s entry level model. You could be looking at your first UN diver!

Led by the Diver Blue Shark, the Diver 42MM joins a new school of 3-hand, shark-inspired diver’s watches from UN; these have been designed as much for life in the city as they have been for the ocean.

The concave bezel and domed sapphire crystals are the same as on the 44mm models launched in September, but these have a new, unexpected vintage look, with clean, uncluttered dials, touches of retro beige, and central seconds instead of UN’s signature sub-seconds.

The inspiration comes from UN’s 1964 dive watch; the Diver Le Locle named after UN’s hometown so proudly sports the brand’s GPS coordinates on their dials.

All the basic diver’s features are present: Superluminova on the 0, hands, and rotating bezel; and water resistance to 300 meters. The classic mid-20th century diver's watch aesthetics are fully backed by 21st-century Silicium, technology first introduced to watchmaking by Ulysse Nardin.

Slim enough to fit snugly under a shirt, they come with stylish strap options: blue fabric, black veal, three-row Stainless steel or, in (a first for Ulysse Nardin), a Stainless steel Milanese shark-mesh bracelet.

UN has opted for a very thick mesh, stamped from sheet steel, painstakingly stitched together by hand, and finished with a retro-styled butterfly clasp. The result is a dressy alternative to other metal bracelets and one that suits the watch so well.

Finally, the Diver Blue Shark Limited Edition in Stainless steel with a blue PVD bezel and a blue dial and strap underscored with bright orange touches, this Limited Edition of 300 pieces has a Blue Shark stamped on its case-back, a nod to its big brother, the Diver Great White 44mm.

Thoughts? This is a promising new direction from UN. We have a new entry-level 3-hander that has a great mix of contemporary UN-flare combined with some nice vintage notes but more importantly it is delivered in a size that won’t strain the wrist and price that hopefully won’t break the bank. Looking Back at 60+ NOTABLE DIVERs of 2019

Before we cast a nostalgic eye back on the past year - I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all OceanicTime readers and sponsors the very best for 2020!

2019 was quite a year for diver’s watches proving once again that the diver segment is one of the most beloved in the industry.

There were plenty of exciting new models with all the usual suspects putting out new releases – however there seemed to be two brands that dominated.

Unsurprisingly Panerai kicked off the year with a strong SIHH lineup but continued to release some exciting new models throughout the year with 14 new models posted here.

UN had a strong presence from Jan when they titillated us with the naughty Classico MANARA right up until December with the release of the new Diver Chrono collection – 10 models posted!

But before we look at some of the most notable releases of 2019; we need to start with Omega who in addition to their new Diver 300M CERAMIC & Ti and JAMES BOND watches delivered something considerably better than a slap in the face with a wet fish.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean ULTRA DEEP Professional was tested to an astonishing 15’000 meters; while it stole the crown from Rolex’s DS CHALLENGE it remains 2nd only to the H2O x OceanicTime 10 MILES.
