SARPANEVA Korona K0 (prototype)

By TLex I spied this dive watch oddity on facebook. It's currently doing the rounds on all the dive watch forums and blogs. I have no idea what to make of it? A a few specs wouldn't go amiss; water-resistance, rotatable inner-bezel, lume?? Price, could be expensive based on other Sarpaneva Watches' models. Certainly interesting, looking forward to finding out more.

Artego-Watches (spy shots)

By TLex My immediate thoughts when I first saw the Artego dive watch, was that it lends very heavily from the overall aesthetic of the HALIOS Holotype (which it does); but on closer inspection the only component it actually shares with the Holotype apart form maybe its Miyota movement is its bracelet, which until now I had thought was specific only to HALIOS watches.

Its spec includes an automatic movement, sapphire crystal, 300m WR, ceramic dial in a choice of 3 colors (blue, black or yellow). Price will be 350USD (steel) 400USD (pvd) including worldwide shipping. Available from April. What do you think?

VOSTOK EUROPE Anchar 300m (spy shots)

By TLex Snapped at Baselworld by a good buddy of mine Craig Hester of Russia2all.com, the 300m Anchar (presumably named after a Russian submarine) seems to be endowed with the odd tritium tube or, two. If I'm right it should glow like a torch!

ESSEX-WATCHES La Primera GMT (intro)

By TLex Established in 2007 by Rainer Brändlein; Essex-Watches are a dive watch brand you may not have come across before; from what I've seen of them they are definitely worth taking note of. Their La Primera dive watch line (that was launched last year) has two 1000m models; the Classic and the GMT (featured here). Both utilize what looks a very nice bead-blasted case with contoured crown guard at the 4 o'clock position, a good indicator that Essex-Watches know a thing or two about dive watch design.

More evidence of this can be seen in the form chunky bezels with ever so slightly saw-toothed grip, clean mat-black dials, over-sized crowns or the 4' o clock crown placement itself. All tried and tested dive watch design elements that work. They have been implemented to create a very nice no-nonsense looking professional diver that comes with a contemporary twist in the form of its bracelet complete with interlocking / woven center-links; a modern take on mesh? The bracelet also features and expandable divers clasp. Stay tuned for more . . .

From Essex Watches A technical engineer with an eye for style, Rainer Brändlein founded Essex in 2007 as an exclusive watch brand for today’s active gentleman.

His passion for sophisticated watches goes back over 20 years. Then, the father of his best friend worked as a watch dealer, buying and selling the most exclusive brands. Fascinated by the watches' design and advanced technical demands, Rainer Brändlein soon dreamed of designing and producing is own unique watch. And now, many years later, the perfect moment has arrived – his dream has come true.

As fate would have it, Rainer Brändlein met just the right people who could realize his plans with expertise: two product designers and a master watchmaker with over 20 years of experience. They were quickly inspired by Rainer Brändlein's philosophy about providing high-quality, timeless watches at a price that isn't over the top – and full of motivation, they set to work.

Two years later, after many drafts and development stages, the Essex La Primera collection of watches was born – and with pride, introduced to the public exclusively in the United States for the first time in Men's Health magazine.

PORSCHE DESIGN P'6780 Diver

From PORSCHE DESIGN The P’6780 Diver is Porsche Design’s second diving watch in more than 25 years. This brand-new timepiece is powered by an automatic movement, handles depths of up to 1000 metres and features a dial that offers excellent readability in the dark.

The Diver’s three-part case design is both unique and particularly intricate: acting as the housing for the dial and the movement, a circular stainless steel container hinges back into a bead-blasted titanium bridge structure held on the wrist by means of a caoutchouc strap. The P’6780 Diver succeeds the well-known Ocean 2000 – Porsche Design’s first diving watch, designed by company founder Prof. F. A. Porsche in 1983. The P’6780 Diver is scheduled for launch in summer 2010.

When it comes to diving, the choice of equipment is crucial. What is needed underwater is a timepiece that is both reliable and accurate so that the dive can be properly managed. The P’6780 Diver’s reliability is assured by the mechanical ETA 2892-A2 calibre automatic movement.

The over-sized hands and large numeric and baton indices are coated with white luminous material to ensure the large dial atop the 46.8 millimetre diameter container remains optimally readable at all times. The white markings also provide a sharp contrast with the black dial. The date aperture is located at 9 o’clock. The diving time is set by means of a flange, inscribed with separate minute graduations, that rotates anti-clockwise around the perimeter of
the dial.

Unique case design - The case of the P’6780 Diver is at the same time both unorthodox and highly functional. Securely anchored within a titanium bridge structure is a hinged container, which can be raised to set the time. This approach prevents the crown from being inadvertently turned and protects it against damage. The Diver’s advanced sealing system is water resistant to 100 atmospheres, equivalent to a depth of 1000 metres. It needs neither a screw-down crown nor a helium release valve. The strap features a special diving extension so it can fit over a diving suit without the folding clasp having to be opened first.

Distinctive blend of materials - The Diver features a unique blend of materials: the clearly expressed shape is complemented by clous-de-Paris detailing, which extends to the container-release buttons and the crown. The silver-coloured stainless steel container provides a striking contrast to the anthracite-grey titanium bridge structure – and this is echoed in the folding clasp. Overall, what emerges are two muted tones bearing the unmistakable signature of Porsche Design.

Setting a solitary colour accent is the vivid yellow arc highlighting the first 15 minutes of the diving time scale. The three hands of the P'6780 Diver are powered by the ETA 2892-A2 calibre automatic movement. The movement's balance oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour–a very high frequency; operating at four Hertz, the balance and spring assembly delivers precise timekeeping. The self-winding automatic movement offers a power reserve of 42 hours.

The design idiom of the P’6780 Diver expresses purity of form, function and timelessness. Like everything else produced by the brand, the timepiece takes its cue from Prof. F. A. Porsche’s stated aim to create products capable of acting as ‘companions through life’. The creator of the legendary Porsche 911 in the early 60s is quoted as saying: “When you think about the function of something, its design sometimes emerges of its own accord.” The Studio’s credo means that its wristwatches can only be circular: it is the shape that describes the movement of the hands.

Porsche Design stunned the industry in 1972 with the first ever black watch. Revolutionary at the time, the resilient, all-black appearance was the outcome of a coating process known as Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD). Then, in 1980, Porsche Design again revolutionised the world of watchmaking with the first titanium timepiece. Three years later came the Ocean 2000, the first titanium diving watch, designed for the divers of the German Navy.

The use of titanium was vital: the watch had to be fully anti-magnetic so it would not inadvertently set off mines while they were being disarmed. In addition, two civilian versions of the Ocean were issued between 1984 and 1998.

Movement/functions: calibre ETA 2892-A2; self-winding automatic movement; 42-hour power reserve; 28,800 vph; 21 jewels; diameter 25.6 mm (11 1/2 lines); hours, minutes and seconds; date indication; Porsche Design rotor.

Dial / hands: Black; date indication at 9 o‘clock; bar indices and numerals filled with luminous material in white; dial ring with diving time indication and minute track; centred black hour hand with grey tip, filled with luminous material in white; centred black minute hand with yellow tip, filled with luminous material in white; centred black seconds hand with white tip.

CORUM Admirals's Cup DEEP HULL 48

This year at Baselworld, as part of their anniversary celebrations CORUM unveiled to the world the dive watch that I have always dreamt they would make; if they had wanted to, CORUM could have produced an incredible diver at any point, this year they have.

The Admiral's Cup DEEP HULL 48 is a nautical watch in every sense; combing the world of yachting above the waves with the world of diving 1000 meters below them. As suited to the consummate professional at helm of a racing yacht as it is to the deep sea diver or executive in the boardroom. A serious piece of kit above or below the waves; and a tough contender that should be able to hold its own against pretty much any other luxury diver in its class.

Crafted from high-grade titanium the DEEP HULL's bold 12 sided case design reflects its 'Admiral's Cup' pedigree. Its 48mm case able to withstand the crushing pressures exerted by 1000 meters of ocean as indicated by the uber-cool '1000m' engraving at the 9.30 position of its case, which is also where the DEEP HULL is fitted a very cool, contemporary design feature; de riguer for any dive watch that wants to be taken seriously, an HEV (helium escape valve).

An HEV such as the one the DEEP HULL 48 is equipped with makes a dive watch suitable for saturation diving. Sat-divers are kept in a helium rich environment as part of their decompression. Helium is a tiny molecule, much smaller than oxygen and as such can seep into the watch's case during the saturation period.

Contrary to some beliefs helium doesn't build up in the watch's case from spending prolonged periods of time underwater at depth; there is virtually no helium present in the ocean, a minuscule 0.0000072 ppm (parts per million) is present in seawater. If large amounts of helium do build up in the watch case from being in a saturation chamber, these helium molecules will expand when the diver and his watch return to the surface; and this is where problems could arise, which might result in the crystal popping out; an exploding dive watch is not a likelihood ;)

The case of this latest novelty in the Admiral's Cup collection with its twelve-sided case, typical of the collection features an impressive diameter of 48mm. Crafted in titanium and easily recognizable thanks to its bold design, it offers a unidirectional and rotating bezel.

Other characteristic of this divers watch, the Admiral's Cup Deep Hull 48, include a small seconds counter at 9 o'clock, an exceptional water-resistance of 100 atmospheres or 1000 meters and perfect legibility in the dark thanks to the SuperLuminova coating on the index and hands.

This broad case houses the caliber CO947, mechanical movement with automatic winding COSC certified chronometer, offering hours, minutes, small seconds, day and date functions. For a perfect resistance to salty water, the Admiral’s Cup Deep Hull 48 is fitted with black vulcanized rubber strap titanium buckle engraved with Corum logo.

This anniversary piece, the Admiral’s Cup Deep Hull 48, is available in a limited edition of 555 pieces, with a black PVD version available in a limited edition of 155 pieces.
