Sinn U1 DS with GRINDED DIAL

Sinn has just released a new U1 variant with an unusual dial but is the iconic U1 that is so well known (nay revered) for its almost clinical aesthetic still up to scratch (you see what I did there – never mind)?

Introducing the new Sinn U1 DS with its “Dekorschliff-Zifferblatt” – that’s the German for decoratively cut dial but what Sinn are calling “grinded”.

I think the technical term for this effect is ombré – needless to say, you’re either gonna’ love the new U1 DS or you’ll be left scratching your head (sorry, I’ll stop with the puns now) because honestly I’m not entirely convinced that it works on such a modern timepiece.

But then again that is probably where its beauty lies; in the stark contrast between the crispy clean dial markers and the downright ragged looking background.

To achieve an ombré effect Sinn grinded the dial with an irregular, decorative pattern - this created a special play of colors as the base material on some portions of the dial reflect light in varying degrees.

The exact same impression achieved on the dial during the machining process can never be replicated - the overall result of which leaves each wearer with their own unique dial. Meanwhile Sinn assure us that the design still allows for perfect readability.

At its core the U1 DS is still a U1 so boasts all Sinn’s high-quality technical features. The case and crown for example are made of high-strength, seawater-resistant, German Submarine Steel, which has outstanding anti-magnetic properties.

While the surface of the case and the captive diver’s bezel with minute ratcheting have also been hardened with TEGIMENT Technology, leaving them practically scratch-resistant.

The U1 DS is also DNV GL verified and certified, is pressure resistant to a diving depth of 1,000 meters and is temperature resistant thus its functionality meets with European diving equipment standards.

Thoughts? If you like your sterile German diving instruments with a bit wabi-sabi flair then this watch is that but for me - I'll stick with matte black, please.
