PANERAI Platinumtech Luminor Marina PAM 1116

Oh Panerai why do you torture me so? Remember how I was gushing little school girl about the ULTIMATE Italian tool diver –

well I think I’m gonna’ need a bigger box of Kleenex because this here is the ultimate dress diver and trust me you’ll want this superlative of Pam diver’s just as much as the aforementioned tool diver – oh but you’ll have to pony up the best part of USD37K for one!

Here’s the latest offering from Panerai’s maverick R&D department, the Laboratorio di Idee the very same guys who put the tech in CARBON FIBER and GOLD etc.

Today Panerai’s alchemy wizards have turned their hand to Platinum creating (in Don LaFontaine’s voice) Platinumtech!

Their muse? The Luminor Marina, the Italian brand’s most famous diver delivered today with an epic 70yrs manufactures warranty as the all new Platinumtech Luminor Marina AKA PAM 1116 which is Limited to a series of just 70 Editions. Said Platinumtech is an especially hardened alloy of Platinum which is likely an alloy of Platinum and Titanium. It has been used for the watch’s main case as well as all of its components including the fixed bezel, case-back and Panerai’s signature crown-locking device.

Everyone knows that a watch is only as pretty as its face so of course Panerai choose imo the perfect look for this special edition watch giving it a stunning sunburst military green sandwich dial with a vintage colored orange lumed portion sat underneath.

The dial is punctuated with a set of blued hands as well as sub-seconds also with a blued indicator. A black date is at 3 o’clock.

Finally this very special watch gets a special engine - Panerais’ in-house Cal. P.9010 automatic movement with 3-days of power-reserve, which can be viewed in part through the watch’s exhibition Sapphire case-back. Yes, so proud are Panerai of their 70 year warranty on this watch that the case-back sports as massive warranty sticker – only it isn’t a sticker – it’s permanent. There seems also be a overuse of the word warranty.

Thoughts? While a 70 year warranty is indeed impressive – I think they are shouting about it a little too loudly in the case-back design which kinda’ kills it for me.

Also a similar look can be found at a fraction of the price even as a PANERAI. What do you think – this is or new Mini Cooper?
