ALSTA Nautoscaph SUPERAUTOMATIC

The Alsta brand has awoken form forty years of slumber, basically the whole of my life.

They officially came back in 2014 with the Nautoscaph II which they touted as the Jaws watch, the one worn by Richard Dreyfuss’s character, Hooper; and are in the process of growing a portfolio of new diver’s watches.

This is the Nautoscaph Superautomatic which Alsta say is the “original” Jaws watch, so I’m a little confused.

Did Hopper wear more than one Alsta; were they wrong on the first model or, are all Alsta Nautoscaph models considered Jaws watches? Can anyone explain?

Regardless they have designed the new Nautoscaph Superautomatic to look as close as possible to the original watch but of course upgraded it with modern materials and technology.

They have also increased the case size slightly to 38mm which is still pretty small so I wonder what the original diameter was – 36mm?

Basic spec. includes a: 316L satin-finished Stainless steel case, a Seiko NH35A automatic movement with 24 jewels, a Sapphire crystal and 300m of water-resistance. There’s no mention of the bezel’s inlay material btw.

The Nautoscaph Superautomatic has also been manufactured and tested to be anti-magnetic resistant up to 4,800 A/m so is ISO 764 compliant as well shock-resistant according to ISO 1413 standards.

Production will be limited to 1975 pieces, the year that the Jaws movie was first released. MSRP is 795GBP.

Thoughts? The watch looks really good; there’s much vintage appeal, the history, the nostalgia etc. plus it comes on a genuine new TROPIC diver’s strap.

I would imagine the quality would be on par with say a contemporary such as Squale but unfortunately because it lacks a Swiss movement and Swiss certification it falls short.

Historically Alsta always displayed SWISS on their dials – so why don’t these? Wouldn’t you prefer a Swiss one or is that not a consideration for you?
