Breitling has given the Superocean Heritage line a refresh for 2017 which includes 2 new models the Superocean Heritage II Chronograph and SOH AUTO.
Whilst distinctly vintage in style the Superocean Heritage has always been a very capable diver boasting most of the latest dive watch innovations, but of course there was always some room for improvement.
First launched in 1957, the Superocean professional divers watch was quickly adopted by some of the earliest sport-divers and has since spawned several generations bearing the famous Superocean name. I remember with fondness my first ‘’proper’’ Swiss dive watch almost 20 yrs ago now – a Superocean, professional.
The redesigned Heritage II is no different except of course that in celebration of its 60th anniversary this year, Breitling has seen fit to incorporate a number of aesthetic features to reflect its historic pedigree.
Breitling have also included other new cutting-edge technologies such as its new steel bezel with an ultra-hard high-tech ceramic ring that is scratch-proof and extremely shock-resistant. Well actually this isn’t really groundbreaking but it does however completely transform the look and feel of the watch.
By removing the metal ring surrounding the minute circle means the bezel appears to form a seamless whole with the dial in a matching color, which now sports a new vintage Superocean logo just like the ones used back in the early days.
The next update or should we say trip down memory lane is that new massive arrow-headed hour-hand hand and sword minute hand along with the slightly conical-shaped hour-markers, recalls ties the 1957 model, while ensuring an even higher degree legibility enhanced by luminescent markers.
The Superocean Heritage II comes in two case sizes, 42 and 46mm and as a 46mm chronograph, which are available in three colors: black, blue or bronze. The latter versions are available with an exclusive brand-new rubber-leather strap in the same color and enhanced by contrasting stitching.
In addition to the leather, crocodile or rubber straps, all the models may be fitted with a steel mesh bracelet referencing the legendary 1957 version.
In terms of performance, the Superocean Heritage II has all the technical qualities that have made it the perfect companion for the finest adventures on land, at sea and in the air. The Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 46 houses a automatic chronograph movement chronometer-certified by the C.O.S.C (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute).
The Breitling Manufacture Caliber B20 powering the Superocean Heriatge II 42 and 46 models, is also a C.O.S.C-certified, high-precision automatic movement with 70-hours of power reserve.
The B2O is in fact derived from the Tudor Caliber MT5612 and boasts exclusive decoration. It represents a part of the recent cooperation between Breitling and Tudor who are currently pulling their expertise and resources in the development and production of certain mechanical movements.
