H2O Kalmar Mokume Gane PROTOTYPE [CuSn8 + 316L]

This amazing looking 3000M water-resistant diver is constructed from a special lamination of CuSn8 Bronze and 316L Stainless steel known as Mokume Gane.

H2O Watches, who have become a pioneer in the use of exotic metals in dive watch construction, are the first to use this particular combination of metals for watch-making.

In fact this could be the first time this particular combination has been used for the production of anything!

In modern terms Mokume Gane is simply a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns. Theoretically any combination of metals could be bonded together; copper and Stainless steel, Stainless steel and Titanium etc etc.

The idea is create a distinct contrast between the different layers of metals in a kind of wood-grain effect. Mokume Gane (木目金) actually translates from Japanese as ‘wood grain’ metal and was invented in 17th-century Feudal Japan by Denbei Shoami.

To increase the contrast between the laminate layers many Mokume Gane items are colored by the application of a patina to further accentuate or even totally change the colors of the metal's surface. That’s why bronze makes a particularly nice contrast with steel.

This is only prototype and will sadly not become production model. However, we will see a similar H2O Mokume Gane watches in the first quarter of the 2015 with slightly different designs and of course with many improvements in detail. This prototype is NOT for sale at the moment!
