Eberhard & Co. SCAFODAT 500

By TLex Here's a diver you don't see too often, which is more the pity because it's a favorite of mine. The Scafodat 500 belongs to Eberhard & Co.'s professional diving-watch collection and as such has a water-resistance of 500 meters.

It boasts a number technical features, which help give the watch its unique character. Let's start with the dial, which has three (four if we count the one that is obscured by the date window) massive Eterna KonTiki-style luminous markers (3, 6, 9 and 12).

Then there' an oversized crown located at 4 o'clock that is equipped with a special security device that controls an inner rotating divers bezel for measuring dive time with a 60-min scale. This is protected by a non-reflecting Sapphire crystal.

In the middle of the case's left lateral side, there's an automatic Helium escape valve. You can't see it here, but it has a quite a cool design with three concentric circles - another nice detail. Under the hood beats a mechanical automatic movement.

The caseback, which is engraved with a Seahorse motif is secured by 6 screws. It has a special 'Chicane' bracelet in steel that is equipped with an innovative patented system to lengthen it. The bracelet is then equipped with the 'Déclic' deployment clasp, which is also patented.

If we take the look of the caseback and the clasp, the Scafodat 500 has imho one of the most attractive and interesting looking rear ends in the business! What do you think?

  1. I don't get the layout of the markers on the dial. How is this practical for timekeeping?
