MAURICE LACROIX Pontos S Diver BLUE DEVIL

With summer firmly behind us and winter fast approaching – here’s something to stave off the winter blues and evoke warmer times to come!

Maurice Lacroix has created an good-looking new blue version of their popular Pontos S Diver.

Created for the North American market (not sure if it or something similar will be available in other territories) in a Limited Edition of just 100 pieces,

the new Pontos S Diver Blue Devil Limited Edition takes its name from Southern Blue Devil, a brightly colored yet fiercely territorial species of fish found in coastal waters of eastern Australia.

Although shy and secretive, the males have been seen aggressively defending their territories in caves or overhangs from other cheeky males trying to muscle in on any potential females.

The Southern Blue Devils are protected due of their low numbers, and their desirability in the marine aquarium industry.

While the Blue Devil is known to inhabit offshore waters down to depths of 30 meters, its namesake –

the Pontos S Diver Blue Devil has the capability of withstanding pressure from depths of up to 20 times that.

With a water-resistance of 600 meters, the Pontos S Diver is the most diving orientated model in Maurice Lacroix’s current collection which includes some other divers models.

Its divers dedicated features include: said 60atm of water-resistance, screw-down crowns for both time adjustment and its internal rotating dive-timing bezel, and a Helium Escape Valve.

It is from this competent dive watch base that Maurice Lacroix created the Blue Devil LE.

Echoing the color of the ocean, the Blue Devil LE features a stunning blue dial. Blue also happens to be the best performing color when descending into the depths.

And like the Blue Devil fish from which it takes its name this new version of the Pontos S Diver has some yellow accents on its face.

Yellow is also one of the best performing colors for the various lighting conditions that a scuba diver might encounter.

The Pontos S Diver Blue Devil Limited comes in a set that includes three straps - presented in a waterproof dry-case.

It is available in a Limited Edition of 100 individually numbered pieces from this November priced 2950USD from all Maurice Lacroix retailers in North America.

MARK GOLD The GAMECHANGER 3000 GMT

You know how people say ‘’ it’s gonna’ be a game changer’’ when they’re referring to an innovative new design concept – well Mark Gold doesn’t just want people to think his new creation is going to be a ‘’game changer’’ –

he has taken the audacious step of actually naming his new deep sea diving concept, ‘’THE GAMECHANGER’’, just in case there was any doubt in our minds whether it was going to be the diver to stop and make us think and perhaps even reevaluate our perception of what a game changing dive watch is.

If you haven’t heard the name Mark Gold before, he is one of the premier jewelry designers in South Africa. With 29 years of experience, his creations are noted worldwide for their exclusive, high-quality designs.

After perfecting the art of designing and producing diamond jewelry, and having won several prestigious awards, Mark Gold has turned his attentions towards the horological world of deep sea dive watches where he hopes to achieve similar success.

The Gamechanger 3000 GMT is Mark Gold’s debut diver’s watch and as the name suggests, it’s a 3000 meter water-resistant affair with a GMT function. Of course there’s a bit more to it than that.

Firstly, the movement has been encapsulated in a patented, fully submersible, 6mm Grade 5 Titanium pod which protects the inner workings of the watch from the crushing pressures exerted by the ocean’s depths.

Then there are two 15mm in diameter crowns that have been comfortably positioned on the left-hand side of the case. These are, the winding crown, and a Helium Escape Valve (10 o’clock), there so that any Helium that has penetrated the case (after prolonged time spent in a Helium rich environment) can be slowly expelled.

Both crowns are protected by a huge integrated crown-guard that spans the whole left side of the case giving the watch a rather dramatic diving-instrument-like quality. On the right-hand side of the case is a locking mechanism for locking the rotational divers bezel.

Despite his background in jewelry, Mark Gold’s first divers models is not a jewelry piece, (thankfully) there isn’t a gemstone in in sight. But that isn’t to say that it isn’t luxurious because it is – it’s just that it has been lavished with high-tech materials such as super-alloys rather than diamonds.

The Gamechanger is a bespoke dive watch with a modular design, which means it can be pretty much tailored to suit any taste. Each piece has been hand-crafted in a small series, one by one. Several case materials, finishes, colors etc. are available.

At this stage I have no idea what kind of movement is powering the Gamechanger. It’s going to have to be something pretty special to warrant its whopping price which starts (yes, starts) from 19,500USD!

I’m not sure what could we liken the Gamechanger to? Perhaps, Richard Mille, there is certainly some similarity in the bezel design, at least from face-on, but after an RM diver, I couldn’t really say what else.

What do you think? Is this really a game changer? I don’t have a definitive answer on that myself, but I’ll say this. It is certainly a fresh design concept – ballsy by name, ballsy by nature and with a ballsy price-tag to boot!

Sinn U1 S & U1 SE

These are the Sinn U1 S and U1 SE, two special new versions of one of Sinn’s most popular dive watches, the U1. The U1 had previously only been available with a black divers bezel, however the new U1 S and U1 SE, now come with an all-over hardened black coating which further protects its already tough, Tegimented steel case and components.

As with all U1 series dive watches, the case, crown and case-back of the U1 S and U1 SE have been made from, high-strength, German Submarine Steel. Besides having extreme seawater-resistance, Tegimented steel also has a high degree of anti-magnetic properties.

All U1 models have a captive bezel design that makes it virtually impossible for the divers bezel with its ratcheting mechanism and dive-time scale to become detached from the main case as a result of hard knocks.

The new Sinn U1 S and U1 SE have also been checked for pressure-resistance and tested based on European diving equipment standards and certified by DNV GL. Full divers features include:

German Submarine Steel case with black hard coating on a TEGIMENT Technology basis, Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides, and a screw-fastened case-back and crown.

The Sinn U1 S and U1 SE not only meet the technical requirements for waterproofness, as set out in standard DIN 8310, but also German diving norm DIN 8306. They are pressure-resistant up to 1000m diving depth (= 100 bar) as certified by DNV GL.

They have also been tested based on European diving equipment standards EN 250 / EN14143 and certified by DNV GL and is also low-pressure resistant.

Powering the new U1 S and U1 SE is a Swiss made SW 200-1 self-winding mechanical movement with: 26 jewels, 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, seconds stop function, shock-resistant as per DIN 8308 and anti-magnetic as per DIN 8309.

Both models have the U1’s signatures matte black dial with block handset. The U1 SE retains the usual look of a U1 with its red hands, while the U1 SE boasts a set of black hands with Ivory-colored lumed hands and markers.
