DRASS WATCH Tecnologie Sottomarine

By TLex Founded 1927 Drass is the oldest continuously active company in the diving industry today, and are unrivaled leaders in saturation diving systems, which include SAT diving bells, hypobaric chambers and rescue systems as well as numerous other offshore and deep sea diving solutions. In fact even as far back as 1937, when Drass held the Galeazzi world record for immersion with an Atmospheric Diving Suit they have been at the forefront of commercial diving systems.

The Italian based company has many arms of which Drass Watch is one, albeit a relatively new one. Drass Watch initially came about from a collaboration with Anonimo, who supplied Drass with a special version of their Millemetri watch, which can still be supplied today.

To cut a long story short and without getting caught up in the politics, when Anonimo encountered financial difficulties a couple years back Drass decided to continue Drass Watch as a sole venture with their own manufacturing; and so Drass Watch’s new line ‘Technologie Sottomarine’ was born using Drass original case designs.

There are strands of Anomimo DNA intertwined with Drass' designs, which share the same Italian dive watch heritage as one might expect also to find in Panerai, Ennebi and more recently U-Boat, but the Tecnologie Sottomarine line is distinctive enough and evolved enough to be its own thing. Drass have applied their vast knowledge, expertise and unrivaled manufacturing of diving systems to their new watch line.

The new line of watches include three distinctive models that use two different case designs. Understated, sober and robust are the SATDIVE and SATDIVE Tungum which share the same case design. The latter has a stunning Tungum fixed bezel. And the TUNGUM watch itself with its unique round case, manual HEV and oversized crown; as simplistic an elegant an example of Italian dive watch design as there is. All models are depth rated to 120atm. Beating away under the hoods of the watches are reliable Swiss made mechanical movements.

Of the features peculiar to the line are oversized crowns with aggressive teeth, smart dial emblems (which bare the Drass name and the watches' 120atm rating) and the use of a relatively unknown alpha-brass known as Tungum alloy for their cases and fixed bezels; not only an innovation, but aesthetic enhancement which further distinguishes Drass.

sat dive collection

As well as being anti-magnetic and non-sparking, Tungum is well suited to marine environments and atmospheres such as the highly corrosive ‘splash zone’ where Tungum pipe is used for the outfitting of saturation control panels and diving bells, which are constantly exposed to saltwater. To date Drass are the only company in the world using this attractive looking alloy in watch design. As well as Tungum, the watch cases are also constructed from 316L Marine grade stainless steel, which comes in three finishes, brushed, polished or PVD.

MORE ON TUNGUM Taken from an article in the British Trade Review 1934, introducing Tungum alloy: ‘Tungum is an alloy discovered by a well-known metallurgist from whose name the alloy is derived. Experimenting with a view to finding a combination of metals suitable for a special purpose he had in view, he produced a compound which is known as TUNGUM. Recognizing that its close likeness to 22 carat gold would make it a marketable commodity the inventor carried out a series of tests which satisfied him that he had discovered a wonderful alloy.’

HELSON Buccaneer (new)

©Ayomi

By TLex Swashbuckling, lopping off heads, walking the plank can take their toll on a timepiece that’s why pirates need a dive watch that they can rely on. The new HELSON Buccaneer is the perfect choice for them. Its 45mm marine grade 316L stainless case is water-resistant to 500 meters. Its extra thick sapphire crystal has been AR-coated on the inside and its hands and markers have been applied with a bright lume application making the Buccaneer the perfect companion for a spot of wreck diving or surveying sunken treasure.

And when crossing time zones on the high-seas the Buccaneer with its Swiss made ETA 2893-2 caliber with GMT function will insure a pirate gets back on time for a stint in the crow’s nest, and will keep good track of time back on dry land. Presented on a dark tan leather strap (complete with skull ‘n’ cross bones no less) and supplied with two unidirectional divers bezels (one with a blue insert to compliment its blue dial) the HELSON Buccaneer would be a welcome addition to any pirates treasure chest. BREITLING & Herbert Nitsch

BREITLING WELCOMES ABOARD AN EXCEPTIONAL NEW PILOT

A longstanding partner of aviation professionals, Breitling is now associating with an airline pilot who is also a freediving world record-holder on familiar terms with both great heights and extreme depths. Nicknamed 'The Flying Fish', Herbert Nitsch is the first and only man to have descended on a single breath to the amazing depth of 700 feet (214 meters), and is now aiming for the legendary 1,000-foot barrier, meaning 305 meters beneath the sea. This exceptional athlete is capable of holding his breath for over nine minutes and is renowned for his formidable mental and physical strength.

The story of Herbert Nitsch is first and foremost of a passion for fling and aviation, which soon led him to take his pilot’s license and to work as an airline pilot for the Austrian Airlines group – a profession he still exercises on a part-time basis. It is also that of a passion for water and for deep-sea diving, which has made him one of the greatest contemporary breath-hold freedivers, Between these two activities, Nitsch is said to rarely have his feet on the ground.

The sporting career of this Austrian athlete born in 1970 began quite by chance with what might be considered a sign of destiny. In 1999, on his way to a scuba diving holiday in Egypt, his equipment went sassing between two flights. Forced to make do with just a diving mask during his entire vacation, he discovered the fabulous world of freediving – and his own amazing personal ability to hold and control his breath. After two weeks’ training, he was already within two meters of the Austrian national record, and two years later, he broke his first international records.

Since 2001, Herbert Nitsch has already set around 30 world records in the eight official disciplines approved by the international Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA), the supreme freediving authority: constant weight; constant weight without fins; free immersion; variable weight; no limit; static apnea; dynamic apnea; and dynamic apnea without fins. In April 2010 in the Bahamas, he established three new records; two in free immersion and one in constant weight. Nonetheless, Nitsch achieved his most glorious feat to date on June 14th 2007, off the Greek island of Spetses, when he reached the depth of 700 feet (214 meters) in the 'no limit' category.

This prodigious record put him well ahead of his main competitors and is still unequaled to date. An innovative, self-taught athlete, Herbert Nitsch has developed his own breath-holding techniques and his own sometimes revolutionary equipment, including a small balloon that helps him balance his breathing. Trained to meet the high demands of the aeronautical world, he gives top priority to safety issues and cooperates closely with scientists and doctors in studying the effects on the human body of apnea and deep-sea diving.

In order to push the borders of human accomplishments and to surpass his own limits, Herbert Nitsch has now set himself the goal of reaching the legendary 1000 foot barrier–corresponding to the incredible depth of 305 meters on a single breath. A feat that will doubtless confirm his second nickname: 'The Deepest Man on Earth'. With the new Breitling Superocean – a rugged, high-performance watch water-resistant to 5000 feet (1500 meters) – he has found the ideal companion in taking up this challenge and ensuring his security as he continues to cultivate his twin passions for great heights and extreme depths.
