ArtyA rounds off its new ‘Son of the Sea’ diver’s collection (which I have yet to fully introduce) with an innovative depth meter dial that provides a multicolored time experience that will put you in a kaleidoscopic head spin from the comfort of your floral-patterned sofa to the murk of the sea floor where color ceases to exist.
Well, it mightn’t do all of those things but what ArtyA’s Depth Gauge will do is put color into a whole new perspective for you!
If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to have spent any time at all exploring a tropical reef, taking in all the sights of clownfish taking sanctuary within anemones or colorful parrot fish chopping on coral like it’s going out of fashion; then you’ll surely agree that few places in the natural world offer such diversity of color.
Yet, color that after descending only a mere 5 meters or so quickly starts to diminish - owing to the fact that certain wavelengths of light are filtered out by water; thus (eventually) leaving you in a colorless world.
The first color on the spectrum to fade is red which is all but gone by just 5 meters. Then at 10 meters, Nemo the clownfish’s vibrant orange is no more. Yellow’s gone at 20m and green at 30m; while blue light is visible as deep as 60 meters.
Btw according to the chart (below) attractive, female, free-divers can occasionally be encountered at 30 meters so long as they aren’t clad in green.
This has allowed ArtyA, like Crepas before them with their DECOMASTER with its chromatic depth-gauge bezel, to capitalize on this scientific phenomenon to produce possibly one of the most affordable means of creating a depth meter for SCUBA divers.
Meanwhile when on dry land, where you are likely without much need for a chromatic depth meter dial, you can simply enjoy the happy colorful rainbow covering the top portion of the dial.
As for the rest of the watch which is based on the Son of the Sea diver, this comes with a 44mm Stainless case which is water-resistant to 300m. It also boasts a wave-shaped diver’s bezel with a ceramic inlay (available in either black or blue).
Power comes from ArtyA’s Aion automatic movement with renowned 3 hands (Swiss BGW9 Super LumiNova applied) architecture, various finishing treatments such as Rose Gold, NAC and Côte de Genève.
The Aion is COSC Certified (Contrôle Officiel des Chronomètres), an independent Swiss certification giving the highest attainable and recognized standard for a mechanical watch movement.
The ArtyA Depth Gauge watch has been produced in a Limited Edition of just 9 pieces each bezel color.
It has an MSRP in Switzerland of 12'900 CHF – the price you pay for this sort of exclusivity and of course ArtyA’s fine Swiss handcrafting and workmanship.
Thoughts? While I appreciate the concept of chromatic depth gauge dial; for day to day use/wear, I’m not so much a fan of unicorns, rainbows or the like on my watch dials. I’m simple man just gimme’ some boring black and I’ll be very happy. But what do you think?
