Squale proudly introduces the new 1521 Classic COSC; a refined take on classic model that has just written a brand new chapter in the brand’s storied history –
with the introduction of a Chronometer Certified movement, a first for the Swiss brand that are renowned for their high quality diver’s watches.
Squale’s 1521 is a true classic, a diver’s watch that has stood the test of time with a history spanning over 4 decades. To those in the know, it is widely regarded as one of the most influential diving watches of the 1970s and to this day, remains a benchmark that diver’s watches of its ilk are still measured against.Squale founder, Charles von Büren designed the 1521 with the sole intention of creating an elegant yet robust watch that could meet the most demanding needs of professional divers.
No frills, just pure functionality in every detail. In essence this was the birth of the tool diver.
For 2022 the 1521 has been given a new level of refinement as it joins the exclusive COSC club of diver’s watches whose movements boast the coveted chronometer certification assuring a higher level of accuracy and performance over regular mechanical movements. To compliment the newly certified inner-workings of the 1521, this new reference can distinguish itself from others bearing the same designation thanks to the inclusion of several new aesthetic tweaks. The first of which is a beautifully reworked dial, now with fully appliquéd indexes instead of basic printed ones. Furthermore, the iconic Squale logo usually found at the 6 o’clock position on the dial makes way for some new dial text reading "Chronometer Officially Certified", which proudly attests the model’s new COSC certification. Meanwhile the classic diver’s bezel and its markers are now fully painted with brightly glowing Swiss SuperLuminova for maximum legibility in low lighting conditions. The 1521 COSC comes with wide array of accessories, composed by a professional waterproof case, two additional straps (one in Italian leather and the other in NATO fabric), a velvet clutch bag, a Squale certificate of authenticity and a COSC certificate, which reports the parameters of the movement's tests. The new Squale 1521 Classic COSC Certified has a Swiss MSRP of CHF 1’290CHF.Thoughts? The Squale 1521 has always been a shining example of what a true tool diver is, and there are a ton of elements that support this:
firstly it has 500 meters of water-resistance, not a paltry 200m because it is quote-unquote classic or refined but a proper level of water-resistance.
Then there’s its 4 o’clock crown position chosen by Charles von Büren, an avid diver because he knew that it would pose less of an interference than if positioned at 3 o’clock.
Also the dial that not only has professional markers, but even in this refined form still comes with a bright orange minute hand, another sign of a watch with true diving credentials.
In addition to this its case was designed by a brand that was also (back in the day) producing high-quality water-resistant watch cases for the likes of Blancpain and Doxa. Now Squale has finally given this historic icon a COSC certified movement along with one or two further enhancements to help distinguish it from its family members.
A classic tool diver made better!
But what do you think? Btw you can rediscover the watch HERE.
