SEIKO Prospex KING Turtle & Samurai SAVE the OCEAN Dark Manta EDITIONS SRPF77K1 & SRPF79K1

Seiko’s diver’s and sports watches division, Prospex continues its special edition “Save the Ocean” diver’s collection created to draw attention to all that is wrong with the oceans (well at least saving sharks and their friends) into 2021 with a new pair of kings!

Now into its 3rd year, the Save the Ocean initiative came about through Seiko’s 2018 partnership with Fabian Cousteau, who is the grandson of the godfather of scuba diving and legendary underwater oceanographer, J-Yves Cousteau.

The new Save the Ocean watches refs. SRPF77K1 & SRPF79K1 (JDM refs. SBDY079 & SBDY081) comprise of a Turtle (SRPF77K1) and a Samurai (SRPF79K1) both of which are “king” variants of the popular diver’s models.

This means they are souped-up with higher grade materials etc. etc. hence their king monikers.

If I remember correctly last year Great White sharks were the topic of the Prospex STO watches; this year the majestic manta ray is taken up in the STO watches’ design with the dials of each of them decorated with manta ray silhouettes set against a special grey-blue dial with a wave-effect, texturized finish.

Basic spec. for SRPF77/ SBDY079 Prospex Save the Ocean King Turtle Dark Manta Edition is: a Seiko automatic caliber 4R36 with +45 to -35 seconds per day and 200m of WR. MSRP is 71,500 JPY (incl. tax).

Basic spec. for SRPF79 / SBDY081 Prospex Save the Ocean King Samurai Dark Manta Edition is: a Seiko automatic caliber 4R35 with +45 to -35 seconds per day and 200m of WR. MSRP is 72,600 JPY (incl. tax).

Both models come with blue silicone diver’s straps and are on worldwide release as of February 2021.

Thoughts? Saving the ocean is among the noblest of causes in my mind, so it’s always pleasing to see a special edition released in support of it - otherwise all these Prospex special edition watches are getting a bit lackluster.

I realize that Seiko are one of the largest watch manufactures in the world, but their factory conveyor belt has been literally pumping out new Prospex special edition watches like some manic, hormonal, pregnant Easter bunny rabbit, so for me they are really starting to lose their shine – besides I’m starting to get them all confused with each other – but what do you think?

STOP WHALING in JAPAN

  1. La gran capacidad productiva de Seiko y de Japon en general no significa que sean malos relojes. Por el contrario, creo que en relacion calidad precio compiten de tu a tu con los mejores exponentes de la competencia en su segmento de precios. Mi opinion claro está.
