BLANCPAIN Bathsycaphe MOKARRAN Limited Edition

Here’s the latest addition to Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms family, the Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition, a special watch dedicated to protection the Great Hammerhead Shark.

Is it just me or has the Great Hammerhead Shark been the stealing the limelight in the watch industry of late. Unfortunately like pretty much all shark species, its numbers are in serious decline.

Blancpain’s most recent initiative supported by its Blancpain Ocean Commitment (BOC) program is devoted to the study of the Great Hammerhead Shark in French Polynesia.

As a continuation of this project, Blancpain is now dedicating a diver's watch issued in a 50-piece special series – the Bathyscaphe Mokarran Limited Edition – to this majestic predator.

This model will be available exclusively in Blancpain boutiques in New York and Las Vegas, USA. Each customer acquiring one of these timepieces will be joining Blancpain in supporting the Mokarran Protection Society to the tune of 1’000USD.

A total of 50’000USD will be added to the brand's regular contributions to promoting, respecting and protecting the fascinating world of the oceans.

The special Mokarran Limited Edition watch is based on a three-handed version of the Bathyscaphe, it also for the first time introduces a new color to the Fifty Fathoms family.

The tropical green sunburst dial is joined by unidirectional diver’s bezel with a matching green ceramic inlay.

Btw, that’s tropical as in the industry term used to describe a watch dial that has discolored over many years, not tropical as in passionfruit and guava!

More ceramic can be found in the construction of the watch’s main case. This made of satin-finished black ceramic. It has a diameter 43.6mm and is water-resistant to 300 meters.

A sapphire case-back provides a chance to admire Caliber 1318, a non-date variant of the 1315. The self-winding movement was specially developed and produced by Blancpain for use in its diver’s watches.

It features a balance equipped with an Si (silicon) balance-spring and three barrels providing a five-day power-reserve.
Its solid gold oscillating weight is NAC-coated and engraved with the effigy of the Great Hammerhead Shark, Sphyrna Mokarran.

In January 2020, Blancpain President & CEO Marc A. Hayek traveled to Rangiroa, French Polynesia, where he took part as a volunteer underwater videographer in a scientific expedition dedicated to the study of the seabed and particularly the Great Hammerhead Shark, Sphyrna Mokarran.

Thoughts? I love the Great Hammerhead as much as the next shark obsessive (with ink to prove). Damn, I’m also a huge fan of green.

Then we have a ceramic case. It ticks all the boxes. Expensive boxes, I’m sure but nevertheless well and truly ticked!

However why is this only a US exclusive release? I wonder what if any LE’s other regions will get? What do you think of the watch, tho?

  1. Nice watch but I find it very hypocrite to pretend to help a good cause while offering a limited edition only available in two boutiques.
