Here’s a 42mm, Limited Edition, little gem from Panerai that didn’t make the SIHH 2017 line-up. It’s called the Mare Nostrom Acciaio (steel) AKA PAM00716.
You know it’s something special when homages have been made of it – but this is the real deal, folks.
Well as close to a 90s Pre-Vendome Mare Nostrum of the type that can trace its roots back to the early 40s when a porotype was made for use by Italian Naval officers who wore it as a deck-watch.
Like many fabled Panerai timepieces – it never really went into production – well not until Pre-Vendome PAM made some models in the 1990s. The PAM00716 is based on this model.
There are several nods and winks to the early Pre-Vendome models. The dial is an obvious one which is in the same blue – which is complimented by a luxurious blue leather band.
Powering the PAM716 is a hand-cranked OP Cal. XXXIII, which is based on a decorated ETA 2801 with a bolted on Dubois-Depraz chronograph module. It has a power-reserve of 42-hours.
This is not the first Mare Nostrum reissue from the Richemont owned Panerai, they have previously released two other models, one in 2010 and more recently the 2015 TITANIO 52MM.
The Mare Nostrum Acciaio 42MM PAM00716 comes in a Limited Edition of 1000 pieces. These will be made available from selected ADs and Pam boutiques this autumn - priced €9900.
The watch comes in a special presentation box with a model of 1940s Italian Naval destroyer.
