In the good old days when all you needed to go diving was a reliable diver’s watch and a big knife to fend off all the hungry sharks, your watch was a crucial piece of kit that your life depended on;
that’s why watchmakers like Breitling set out to give them (divers) the most clear-cut dive watch possible by eliminating any feature that didn’t support their lifesaving needs underwater.
This pared-down watch was named the Slow Motion. What remained were clean lines, chunky luminescent indexes, squared-off hands and a high-contrast dial ring, all aimed at maximum legibility. It was an extremely practical watch but apparently what people grew to appreciate about it was its look with its blocky dial markers and mallet-like sweeping central second hand. The new Superocean retraces the Slow Motion's celebrated design codes, while adding modern features, like a ceramic-inlayed diver’s bezel and brightly colored dials. Meanwhile those broad hands and indexes in luminescent Super-LumiNova® allow for easy readability in the surf or indeed underwater. The watch is water-resistant to down 300 m (1000 ft), as well as being shock-, sand- and saltwater-resistant. Its scratch-proof ceramic inlayed bezel will never wear or fade. The bronze version uses a special alloy that has excellent resistance to corrosion, yet will still develop a subtle patina over time that makes the watch even more unique.The two strap options (rubber and metal bracelet) have a folding clasp that allows for micro-adjustments of up to 15mm for easy wear over rashies and wetsuits.
For safety, the bezel is unidirectional on most sizes and bi-directional with a patented lock on the 46mm variant.
Thoughts? Sand-resistant and fits over rashies! Breitling has finally realized that surfer dudes and dudettes will also appreciate all those virtues that we extol in our diver’s watches.
Btw I was gonna’ head this article ‘got flange’ but it sounded rude so I went for 'got rehaut' instead and yes this has got plenty of chapter ring if that’s what you like in a watch.
I like a nice flange as much as the next man but I'm not really into the wider variety as seen here. I prefer mine looking a little more svelte but everything else is great! But what do you think?
