SEIKO PROSPEX 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation SLA033 AKA CAPTAIN WILLARD

Last year it was the Prospex 1968 Diver’s Re-Creation, this year Seiko Prospex has once again recreated one of their most iconic historic diver’s watches.

The Prospex 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation Limited Edition Ref. SLA033 / SBDX031 (Japan) is the Seiko release that you have all been waiting for and it’s here.

Famously worn in the Vietnam War epic, Apocalypse Now by Captain Willard, played by Martin Sheen, the OG 1970s Diver Ref. 6105 was one of Seiko’s first ever dedicated diver’s watches (not the very first that honor goes to the 62MAS).

It is the modern Turtle’s earliest ancestor; a watch that Seiko aficionados have been seeking and geeking out over for decades, it is probably the most sought after of Seiko’s vintage models after the 62MAS.

For 2019 Seiko have faithfully recreated this watch. In terms of its general appearance it remains the same but it has been upgraded accordingly.

It has an increased water-resistance of 200m, just 50m over the historic model and now gets a double-domed, anti-reflective treated Sapphire crystal.

The case size has also slightly increased – just 1mm to be precise. It now measure 45mm in diameter with a lug-to-lug of 49mm and a height of 13mm.

The main case benefits from Seiko’s Dia Shield hardening process while its iconic coin-edge bezel boasts Seiko’s famous Zaratsu mirror-polishing.

Powering the 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation is modern Seiko caliber, the 8L35 automatic movement with 26 jewels, a beat-rate of 28000 vph and a power-reserve of 50hrs.

It is delivered on a vintage-style 3D diamond black rubber diver’s strap with a Stainless steel buckle.

The 1970 Diver’s Re-Creation is a Limited Edition of 2500 pieces and because it is a special release it will be assembled by Shizukuishi Watch Studio in Japan.

Ref. SLA033 MSRP is 4,250USD / Ref. SBDX031 has Japanese MSRP of 450,000 JPY+TAX. The watch will be available, worldwide from July of this year.
