Sinn U1 DE Special Edition

November 9, 1989 – I actually remember where I was when the Berlin was torn down. I was living in Paris. I was a little bit too young to realize the significance of such an event but the enormity was not lost on me.

A year later East and West Germany were officially reunified. That was thirty years ago; and if like me you can remember – dude we’re getting old!



As Germany prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its reunification on October 3 2020, Sinn would also like to acknowledge the event with the release of the U1 DE Special Edition.



As a German watchmaker, reunification bears some significance for Sinn beyond the historical date as it’s synonymous with the story of two companies which continue to actively embrace the merging of east and west to this day.



Qualified engineer Lothar Schmidt, owner of Sinn Spezialuhren, and Doctor of Engineering Ronald Boldt, co-owner and Managing Director of Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte (SUG), have continued to develop the partnership established in 1999 between Sinn Spezialuhren and SUG.



Lothar Schmidt has held 74% of all SUG shares since the disastrous flood of 2002. Working with Ronald Boldt, he has created an upmarket case manufacturing company, which is now successfully managed primarily by son Daniel Boldt.



To mark this special occasion, Sinn designed Special Edition U1 watch in Germany’s national colors.

The colors black, red and gold, which have always been a symbol of German reunification and are anchored in the constitution as the colors of the flag, go all the way back to the Wars of Liberation (Germany, 1813 – 1815).



The black, red and gold flag appeared in its present-day form at the Hambach Festival of 1832 for the first time. Reunification was celebrated with the raising of a black, red and gold flag in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin.

The special features of the 300 piece U1 DE SE include the use of Germany’s national colors with a high-gloss, gold-plated second hand.While the case-back has both Sinn and SUG's logos plus the words "30 Jahre Deutsche Einheit" (30 years of German unity)



Specialist diver’s features found on the U1 include: a case and crown made of high-strength seawater-resistant, German Submarine Steel with a black Hard Coating based on Sinn’s TEGIMENT Technology.

The watch has been tested based on European diving equipment standards and certified by DNV GL and is pressure-resistant up to 1,000m diving depth (= 100 bar), certified by DNV GL.



It also boasts Sinn’s - captive diver's bezel with minute ratcheting and a crown at 4 o'clock to prevent pressure on the back of the hand.
