CHRISTOPHER WARD C65 Super Compressor

Christopher Ward has released a new compressor cased diver; the new C65 Super Compressor which they claim is the first genuine super compressor diver’s watch in 50 years.

Here’s why - with every meter you descend with the new C65 Super Compressor, its water-resistance increases thanks to an ingenious mechanism known as a compression spring.

CW have reverse-engineered technology used almost half a century ago by case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA) –

who invented the famous Super Compressor system which uses water pressure to press the case-back tighter against the O-ring gasket the further it descends.

Nearly 50 years after the last true super compressor appeared, the mechanism is back – in the shape of the C65 Super Compressor.

CW say of the C65 SC, that it is a fully functioning super compressor with 60s style.

And thanks to improvements in watch construction, it’s the first one to boast an exhibition case-back, through which you can see the ultra-thin compression spring.

At just 300 microns thick, the spring (placed within the compression ring) that enables the compressor to work, is just four times the width of a human hair.

If you look closely, you’ll even see the OG diving-bell marking, the logo Ervin Piquerez historically used to signify authenticity.

Its screw-down crown at 4 o’clock controls the hands and date whilst the one at 2 o’clock rotates the internal countdown bezel.

This crown isn’t screwed down as this would make its use difficult for divers, but CW have ensured its water-tightness by using two internal gaskets as well as two external ones.

It also carries the crosshatch markings synonymous with the OG Super Compressor diver’s watches.

The C56 SC also has new cushion-shaped light-catcher case, whose near-rectangular shape not only has retro appeal but is said to comfortably slide under a shirt cuff.

The watch is available in two color options (black or blue) the dial contrasts against the indexes and baton hands (coated in SuperLumiNova Grade X1 GL C1), plus the rotating inner bezel.

Power comes from a Swiss made Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. MSRP is from 895GBP.
