Blancpain have given one of their Bathyscaphe models a scorching hot new desert-colored look.
The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert is a 500-piece Limited Edition model inspired by a Blancpain diver's watch from the 1970s.
It is characterized by a gradient-colored sandy beige dial with a dazzling sunburst pattern, said to be evocative of Death Valley in the United States.
This where Ernest H. Brooks II, pioneer of underwater photography and contributor to Blancpain’s Edition Fifty Fathoms project, made an amazing dive in 1962.
The dive was to Devils Hole, an underwater chasm that plunges into the bowels of the earth at a depth of more than 120 meters before opening out into a gigantic underwater river.
Devils Hole is also unique in that it is the exclusive home of a critically endangered species of fish, Cyprinodon Diabolis, which Brooks took the first ever pictures of.
The new desert-colored Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date comes for the first time with a subtle gradation of sandy beige, a hue that is entirely new to the FF collection.
Its shades and sunburst finish are said to give it a high level of clarity, while its boldly-sized rectangular hour-markers guarantee instant readability of the information displayed.
A chapter ring punctuated with Arabic numerals marks the five-minute intervals while echoing the inner rotating ring of the 1970s model from which it was inspired. Just as on the OG timepiece, the date and day of the week windows are located at 3 o'clock.
The hands are coated with SuperLumiNova and feature the same baton-shaped design as earlier Bathyscaphe models. The dial of the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert Edition is enhanced by a unidirectional rotational diver’s bezel with a brown ceramic inlay and Liquidmetal hour-markers.
Although this new model has a vintage look, its mechanism is state-of-the-art. Housed in a 43mm satin-brushed Stainless steel case and water-resistant to 300m, the Manufacture-made 1315DD movement offers all the performance attributes essential to a diver's watch. It also features an autonomy of up to five-days.
Another key feature is its balance fitted with an Si (silicon) balance-spring which is resistance to magnetic fields. The sapphire crystal case-back of the watch affords a view of high-end finishing of the range-topping movement, which includes its gold rotor with a NAC treatment.
Issued in a 500-piece limited series, the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert Edition model comes with a sandy-colored canvas sail – a matching sandy NATO strap is sadly conspicuous by its absence.
Thoughts? We don’t see enough desert dials. We (I) need to troll one of the smaller brands into making something cool with a similar sort of sun-brushed sand dial and matching NATO. What do you think; a good look?
