Anyone up for a new PAM? Of course you are. Your wallet mightn’t agree but listen to your heart, folks cos’ Panerai’s are all about Italian passion.
Actually when it comes to watch buying, if we all listened to our hearts we’d probably all be broke as hell.
So don’t do that but if you are in the market for a new Submersible and Lockdown’s got you down, then allow the kind folks at Panerai to cheer you up with their latest creation while alleviating you of the burden that is the 9’800 bucks that’s been burning hole in your PayPal account.
This is Panerai’s latest Ecommerce Exclusive edition, an online only release of which we will probably be seeing more and more of given the current status quo, but to be fair, Panerai do usually drop an ecom. edition during the quieter summer months such as THIS one from last year.
This one’s called the Submersible Azzurro 42mm AKA PAM1209. Emerging in blue as the brand’s latest professional diving instrument, it is a Limited Edition model of just 500 pieces.
Panerai has a past that is literally steeped in frothing seawater and Italian naval history dating back several decades. They even supplied watches for the special commando frogman units, piloting manned-submarines during WWII (as depicted on the case-back).
The fact that the Italians started off batting for the wrong team during WWII and that those Panerai-equipped, manned-torpedo units were sent to destroy Allied ships in the port of Alexandria is by the by. Eh, watcha gonna do!
Like any good PAM diver, this watch’s development benefited from the brand’s proven technical know-how; however it is all about its blue bezel. As its name suggests (azzuro btw, is the Italian for light-blue), the color on the opaque ceramic bezel inlay is blue, a hue that is highly evocative of the ocean.
Seawater has coursed through the brand's veins since they first begun while blue has apparently been Italy's unofficial national color since its unification, a milestone reached just a few months after the opening of Giovanni Panerai's first historic Florentine shop.
The new Submersible Azzurro 42mm features a unidirectional rotating bezel, screwed case-back and the iconic bridge device to protect the crown. Luminescent indexes, hands and dots glow in a green-blue hue for increased legibility underwater.
The watch is powered by the P.900 Caliber, designed and developed entirely by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel.
The highly accurate, resistant and high-performing, caliber is the first proprietary automatic movement from Panerai of its diameter and thickness (4.2 mm) to combine the date function and 3-days of power-reserve.
Water-resistant up to 300 meters, the new Submersible Azzurro 42mm features a black rubber strap with a trapezoidal pin buckle in brushed steel.
A second strap in Sportech Velcro black is also included, along with a tool for changing the straps and a screwdriver to remove the buckle.
The watch’s retail price in the US is 9’800USD. The watch will go on sale starting, today (September 1st 2020).
Thoughts? I must admit, I wouldn’t mind one of these. The blue ceramic bezel is very nice and seeing as there are already plenty of generously proportioned models in the Submersible inventory; it’s good to see another 42mm offering. What do you think?
