ORIS Aquis HAMMERHEAD Limited Edition

ORIS are on fire at the moment; this is ANOTHER great looking watch – just look at that dial. Okay, I’ll admit I’m not such a fan of the day-date but that sunburst grey with those pops of blue from the lollipop seconds indicator and minutes-scale on the rehaut are very pleasing to the eye.

Besides this, the ORIS Hammerhead Limited Edition which incidentally is based on the second generation AQUIS, also launched this year is on a bit of a mission to save the world’s shark population which between me and you (and excuse my French, folks) is almost f#@&*d beyond repair!

Leading ocean conservation experts (who have been tracking the decline of the world’s shark population over the last 50 years) believe that most sharks will be extinct within 40 years’ time a very troubling prediction.

With that in mind, the new ORIS Aquis Hammerhead Limited Edition will help raise funds for a shark conservation project run by the non-profit organization called Pelagios Kakunjá that is supported by ORIS brand ambassador and professional diver, Jérôme DELAFOSSE.

Pelagios Kakunjá’s mission is to understand movements and migratory pathways of oceanic apex predators. Its latest project will look to learn more about migration routes of the endangered Scalloped Hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) species of shark in the Eastern Pacific.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the global population of Scalloped Hammerheads has declined by up to 90 per cent over the last 30 years!!!

Project scientists will tag sharks using MiniPAT satellite transmitters funded by ORIS. Each transmitter will track the sharks for six to nine months before being automatically released on a set date and floating to the surface, from where they will transmit all collected data to satellites.

This data will help scientists understand sharks better so that they can advise government agencies on fishing practices. Fishing is one of the greatest threats to sharks, which can become entangled in nets while feeding.

Jérôme will join the expedition together with fellow conservationists Dr. James Ketchum, Pelagios Kakunjá’s Director of Marine Conservation; shark specialist Dr. Mauricio Hoyos, who filmed the largest Great White Shark ever captured on film; and record-breaking free-diver and underwater photographer Fred Buyle.

Based on the second generation Aquis collection, the Hammerhead Limited Edition has been designed using DNA from the original 2011 Aquis, bringing the same high-level of performance but with perhaps a more stylish albeit slightly less rugged silhouette.

The new Aquis has a visually lighter feel than its predecessor. But it still endowed with the same diving features such as its unidirectional rotational divers bezel with a black ceramic inlay, and water-resistance to 500 meters.

The ORIS Hammerhead Limited Edition is not only a high-performance professional divers watch – it will also go some way to help fight the threat of shark extinction specifically playing a significant role in the conservation of the hammerhead shark.

The ORIS Hammerhead is a Limited Edition of 2000 pieces. It goes on sale this June, priced 2550CHF.
