Panerai already put in a very respectable showing at SIHH, earlier this year but for whatever reason they held back this bronzed beauty until now.
The new Submersible Bronzo 47MM AKA PAM00968 follows in the footsteps of other Submersible Bronzo models.
It dates back to 2011, when PAM00382 was introduced as the brand’s first ever bronze production model.
Since then the Italian brand have turned to the ancient material for a further four models.
Panerai mention that the watch constitutes 161 grams of bronze. I believe they are still using CuSn8 bronze alloy.
Every modern dive watch or indeed wristwatch made from BRONZE largely owes its very existence to Panerai, whose engineers pioneered the use of bronze in watchmaking.
Historically Panerai first used bronze in the 1980s when a famous PROTOTYPE model, the legendary Milli Metri, designed by Alessandro Bettarini (now of Ennebi Instruments) was created for the Italian Navy.
But it was a handful of ex-Panerai engineers under the (now defunct) Anonimo Firenze brand who first started to use bronze for production models. The rest as they say is history.
So what does the 2019 Bronzo bring to the bronze party, for starters (if I’m correct) it’s the first Bronzo to be equipped with a modern ceramic bezel.
This micro-sandblasted brown ceramic bezel has been perfectly matched to a brown dial.
And for the first time on a Panerai Bronzo, it is presented on a rubber diver’s strap – not in brown but in olive green.
Powering the watch is an automatic P.9010 caliber, entirely developed and created in the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel.
It has central hour and minute hands and a sub-seconds dial at 9 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock.
MSRP is a coronary inducing 16500USD + taxes. Thoughts? As much as I harp on about bronze, I am kinda’ over it.
I’d take a Stainless steel or Ti Submersible over this any day of the week but it still looks pretty. What do you think?
