SMW Chronograph Automatic Valjoux 7750

By TLex I'm not sure if I've introduced SMW here before, but I've had them listed under 'MILITARY' watches along with MARATHON (who have an almost identical model in their Chronograph Pilot Watch) for a couple of years now, so you might have already checked them out.

SMW's latest model features a Swiss Made Valjoux Caliber 7750 automatic chronograph movement. It uses H3 illumination technology with 16 trigalights; green is used for the hour markers and hands, and orange for the 12 hour markers on the dial and bezel.

The SMW's 7750 has a day / date display with rapid date and day correction. The chronograph has 1/5 second (100th minute) timing and is housed in an anti-magnetic casing. It has up to 44 hour power reserve. Its 47mm x 14mm Stainless steel case allows up to 30atm / 300M / 990ft water-resistance by using a screwdown crown, chrono pushers and caseback.

It features a uni-directional divers bezel and comes on a steel milanese (mesh) bracelet. Retail is 2'700euro (2'850 for the PVD model). For comparison the MARATHON Chronograph Pilot Watch (see bottom) is 2'700USD (on rubber).

The teeth surrounds on the dial are now also in blue. Specifications for the new Titanium Meg remain the same the SS Meg 3. So that's 49mm (bezel) / 47mm (case) x 19.6mm with a lug to lug measurement of 55mm and a lug width of 24mm, a 4mm thick double domed sapphire crystal and a water-resistance of 2'500m.

LUMINOX Deep Dive 1509 (in action)

The 316L Stainless Steel case with its black PVD coating measures 45mm x 17mm. It has a water-resistance of 20 ATM, 200m or 660ft and is fitted with a uni-directional rotational divers bezel and a screwdown crown.

The hands and dial markers have been applied with SuperLumiNova. Both, cover and strap are black and colored silicone. The buckle is 316L black PVD coated. I'm not too sure about the movement; I think it's a Japanese Quartz, possibly a Citizen. Functions include: hour, mins, 24hr and date.

Not a particularly serious dive watch, perhaps a fun accessory if you're digging the color combo or even a daily wearer for the Green Hornet?! Regardless TechnoMarine seem to have found their niche and have asserted themselves as a leading purveyor of fashion sports watches.

OMEGA Seamaster 300M James Bond 50th Anniversary Edition

By TLex Yesterday we saw a couple of leaked images of the new OMEGA Semaster 300M James Bond 50th Anniversary watch. The images weren't of a particularly good quality, so perhaps didn't do the watch justice. Suffice to say the watch looks a lot better now. That's not to say that I'm in love with it; far from it! I'm still really not keen on the '007' pattern on the dial, but have a new found appreciation for other details like the ceramic bezel insert with its red matte chromium nitride '50' minute marker and the the custom bullet rotor and gun barrel effect caseback . . .

To commemorate 50 years of James Bond film-making, OMEGA will release a special updated version of their Seamaster Diver 300M James Bond watch, which was worn by Bond in Goldeneye and a number of movies prior to that. The James Bond 50th Anniversary Seamaster 300M has been produced in two case sizes, 41mm for gents and 36.25mm for ladies. The 41mm version will be produced in a Limited Edition of 11'007 pieces; the 36.25mm version in 3'007 pieces.

The watch cases are constructed from Stainless steel and feature ceramic bezel inserts with elapsed dive-time scales in matte chromium nitride with their '50' minute markers in red to reflect the 50th Anniversary. Each version of the watches comes on a classic brushed and polished OMEGA patented screw-and-pin stainless steel bracelet.

Their lacquered black dials features a 007 monogram pattern. The 41mm version has 11 applied hour markers; whereas the 36.35mm version has just ten with a diamond index at the 7 o'clock position to signify James Bond's agent number '007'. The hour markers have been applied with white SuperLumiNova of the type used on all new generation Seamaster divers. Presumably the minute-hand and the 12 o'clock bezel marker have been applied with green SuperLumiNova to allow optimum reading in poor light conditions. There's a black date window at 3 o'clock.

Both versions will house OMEGA's calibre 2507 self-winding movement, which is fitted with their revolutionary Co-Axial escapement, the component that has driven a revolution in mechanical watchmaking since it was first launched in 1999.The watches are certified chronometers.

The screwdown caseback has been stamped with a gun-barrel design. And a custom 'bullet' adorned rotor can be viewed through a central sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on its inside. Further features include: a unidirectional rotational divers bezel, a helium escape valve or HEV designed as such to allow helium atoms to escape during decompression, a feature required for SAT diving, where professional divers operate from diving bells. As indicated by its name, the watch has a water-resistance of 300 meters.

So not such a terrible watch after all! However I think the news that we (Omega / Bond fans) are all waiting for is - which version of the new PO family will Daniel Craig be wearing as James Bond in the upcoming movie Skyfall? There has been some speculation and even rumors of the new Blue Ti version - we shall see!

OMEGA SM 300 '007' 50th Anniversary Edition FirstLook

By TLex Here's a spy shot of the new OMEGA Seamaster 300 '007' 50th Anniversary Edition that celebrates 50 years of James Bond film making. The watch looks to be based on the NewGeneration of Seamaster 300 watches that are equipped with the latest Omega Cal. 2500 Chronometers and that come with lacquered dials and ceramic bezel inlays.

Special features of the watch include a '007' pattern on the dial, a red '50' minute marker on the divers bezel (in connection with the anniversary) and a custom bullet rotor, which can be viewed through the display window of the caseback with signature James Bond spiraling gun barrel effect taken from the opening sequence of the Bond films. As we can see from the caseback the watch is a (not so) Limited Edition of 11'007 pieces.

Not a particularly attractive version of the new SM 300 I have to say; the dial pattern is gaudy and the rotor a little tacky, but to many it will be quite a collectible item . . .

The watches will be released and shipped by the end of March 2012. They can be pre-ordered HERE for a 1290USD, retail is 1690USD. There are no renderings of the watches yet, but we have a video of one of the bronze cases being machined and full specifications are below.

It's great to see bronze, which of late has been embraced by the Boutique and Artisan sectors being adopted by larger watch companies such as Aquadiuve. The pricing is interesting to me as there doesn't seem to be the premium for bronze that we have seen with a number of the Asian micros brands. I wonder if we will see a BS 300 Bronze, let's hope so. Fantastic news, too for ISOFRANE fans, a custom brown strap with a brown DLC buckle will be supplied with the new BS 100 Bronze . . .

Rolex U.S. MARINE Prototype

By TLex Here's a really cool watch that has continued to intrigue me since I first discovered it. The Rolex U.S Marine Prototype was produced by Rolex in 1982 for the U.S Marines. However it never went into production. This exceptionally rare watch features a rather unique way of locking its bi-directional timing bezel. The large detachable lug hoods lift up to allow manipulation of the bezel, and lower down again to securely lock it in place.

The recessed crown guard is so cool. There's some lovely beveling at the top, but what I really like is how it extends out and down from the middle of the case to meet the top of the right lug. The watch was generously proportioned for its day, too. It measured 44mm with a lug to measurement of 58mm. The example featured here was sold at auction by Antiquorum in 2004 for 72'000USD. I have never come across one, other than this and one other that was found to be a fake.

From JR After the initial titanium versions, this is the first model in the line to be presented with its distinctive cushion-shaped case made from polished and satin-finished stainless steel. The solid caseback is secured by four screws which, together with the screw-lock crowns at 9 and 3 o'clock – respectively controlling the hour&date and the internal bidirectional rotating bezel – guarantee water resistance to the respectable depth of 1,000 feet (300 metres).

This robust and reliable sporty model is powered by a 26-jewel automatic JR 1010 movement, based on the in-house made JR 1000 movement launched in 2004 and successively enriched since then with nine different evolutions. By TLex VULCAIN have released 209 piece Limited Edition reissue of their diver's watch from 1961. The Nautical HERITAGE Limited Edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of this historical dive watch. Faithful to the original design, its 42mm case has a water-resistance of 300 meters and is fitted with a plexiglass crystal. In the early 60s a 42mm case diameter was a considerable size that was chosen as such for optimal reading of the watch's dial. It houses the legendary CRICKET Caliber V-10 with alarm.

The alarm, which is clearly audible underwater, can be used to indicate elapsed dive time. It can be used in combination with the watch's superimposed decompression tables, which are adjustable by a screwdown crown at 4 o'clock. There's rectangular opening on the dial through which a diver can read the downtime required for conventional levels of 9, 6, and 3 meters, depending on the depth and duration of their dive. To add a further sense of authenticity Vulcain have used a lovely gold-tinted vintage style luminous material for the handset and hour markers.

By TLex The Michel Herbelin watch company was founded in 1947 by Frenchman, Michel Herbelin. But it wasn't until his son Jean-Claude joined the company some 25yrs later that the brand started to make a name for itself, at least in France anyway. Even today I have to admit it is surprising that the brand doesn't have more recognition; they produce some 150'000 watches a year, which sell in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Their watches, which follow a sailing theme (their logo is a ship's wheel) have three lines; Newport Marine, Newport Trophy and Newport Trophy Grand Sport, a collection of 10 models, all of which are suitable for diving. They have uni-directional divers bezels and water-resistance for the line ranges from 200m - 1000m.

All house Swiss calibers; some autos like the 7750 (above) which is due for release this year, some quartz like the 1000m diver (below). The name Newport Trophy comes from the America's Cup race to Newport, Rhode island. Below is the Grand Sport DIVER 1000m . . .

By TLex Introducing the KADLOO Windward MASTER. Its 45mm Stainless steel case has a water-resistance of 200m and is fitted with a sapphire crystal and a uni-directional rotational divers bezel. Check out the font used for the elapsed dive time scale - the 2s, 3s and 5s are quite terrible.

The watch case features an exhibition caseback, which affords a view onto a Swiss made Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph caliber. Functions include time, day and date. The dial, which comes in three color variants is with SuperLuminova applied hour markers.

I first saw these watches almost a year ago at the Basel fair. I'm not sure why I didn't get round to posting them until now. It could have been because Kadloo as brand doesn't really interest me, the watches bare far too many borrowed design elements for my liking.

Having said that, I can't really find fault with their use of color; it's always nice to see brown being used and blue and orange / yellow alway work beautifully together. Nor can I find fault with the good looking handset - wait a minute, yes, I can, there won't be nearly enough lume . . .

Vintage VDB 2012 PVD FirstLook

By TLex 2012 is already upon us, we have already had a first look at the Italian-Mil styled VDB 2012, which is part of VDB's ongoing release of annual Limited Edition production models. Now here it is again in PVD. The finish will most likely be a dusky vintage-style finish in keeping with other PVD finished VDB models.

The PVD version has one other cosmetic difference aside from its case finish, it uses vintage orange dial markers instead of the yellow that the regular version has. Apart from this it house a different movement, too, a NOS A. Schild AS1920 Automatic movement with 42hrs of power-reserve. Stay tuned for more . . .

VOSTOK-EUROPE Anchar TITANIUM OnBlack

By TLex Earlier this week I introduced the new VOSTOK-EUROPE Anchar TITANIUM, which comes in three dial, bezel and strap combos. However I wasn't too sure about the intensity of the colors of the straps, so here are the watches again, somewhat toned down on black rubber divers straps.

By TLex The first thing to say about the SERKET Reef Diver 2.0 was that only 200 pieces were ever made, and those sold out more than three years, priced 999USD. The Reef Diver with its huge chunky - sawtooth bezel and oversized crown, positioned at 2 o'clock was a bold looking dive watch.

Its case measured 47mm x 16.5mm and had a water-resistance of 300m. It featured a 4mm thick sapphire crystal and housed a Swiss mechanical movement, the 26 jewel Sellita SW200 Automatic, which could be seen through an orange mineral crystal caseback . . .

By TLex The Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph is a tribute to a legendary dive watch, the Memovox Deep Sea, the first mechanical dive watch to be fitted with an alarm in watchmaking history; it's mechanism was used to remind divers when it was time to return to the surface. This historical diver was fitted with a LeCoultre 815 automatic calibre. It was lovingly reproduced by JLC in 2011 as the Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea.

The new Deep Sea Vintage Chrono, which will be officially unveiled at SIHH 2012 next week follows in the same vein, taking its vintage design cues such as a simple black fixed bezel (there were no dive watch standards in the 50s that called rotational bezels), a classic black dial and authentic Plexiglass crystal right of the pages of JLC's history books. Notice, too the hands and hour-markers, which have been applied with a warm orange-tinted Superluminova reminiscent of the lume used by the 1959 Memovox Deep Sea.

The watch is powered by the latest 37 jewel Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 751G with 65hrs of power-reserve. It is housed in a 40.5mm stainless steel watch case. We can't see it here, but the caseback bears the same engraving depicting a frogman surrounded by bubbles as the original Deep Sea. The watch is finished with an embossed black tropic-style calfskin leather strap so as to replicate the exact look of the straps that the historical Deep Sea models were fitted with.

This is a watch that is no doubt aimed at the connoisseur rather than diving professional, it's water-resistance is just 100 meters, but its design faithfully follows in the footsteps of its Deep Sea lineage and it evokes a certain amount of nostalgia for the days when divers were more than just divers they were pioneers of the deep; JLC delivers another fitting tribute!

By TLex Vostok Europe announces the first of their novelties of the 2012 year and it's a diver! The new ANCHAR named so after the world's fastest attack submarine, the K-162 Anchar submarine was constructed with a titanium hull, one of the predominant factors that allowed it to achieve such a high velocity and one that also contributed greatly to the durability of this famous submarine.

The use of the titanium for the new ANCHAR watch line is not only of symbolic significance as it was inspired by the Anchar submarine, but also the new titanium ANCHAR watches are now up to 1.5 times lighter than their stainless steel predecessors, weighing just 100g instead of 150g. They are also hypoallergenic, which makes them extremely comfortable against the skin.

An ANCHAR in Titanium is a great idea, however I'm a little concerned about the bright colors, specifically the green, it screams FASHION DIVER to me! It really needs to be on a black strap, and if we must use green, let's tone it down a little, please . . .

Carl Spencer's DIVERS (a legend's divers)

By TLex Two DOXA Subs and a ROLEX Sea-Dweller from the estate of Carl Spencer will go on auction in the UK this month. Tech-diving pioneer and one of the world's most accomplished and respected deep-wreck divers, sadly died aged just 39 from decompression sickness, or 'the bends'. The tragic accident happened whilst on an underwater filming mission to explore the Britannic, the Titanic's sister ship. Carl had actually worked on the Titanic itself with the film director James Cameron.

Lot #49 is a circa 2007 Limited Edition DOXA Seaconqueror SUB 5000T Professional, #169 / 5000.

Lot #50 is a circa 2007 Limited Edition DOXA Diving with Legends SUB 1200T Professional, #39 / 99. The watch comes together with the Diving With Legends book, a book that featured, Carl Spencer among other diving greats. Each of the DOXA watches are expected to fetch between 1'000 and 1'500GBP at auction.

Lot #225 is a circa 2002 ROLEX Sea-Dweller 16600 T. It is expected to fetch between 3'000 -4'000GBP.

HELSON Gauge V2.0

The watch features a Titanium mono-bloc case with an HEV at the 12 o'clock position, a bronze fixed bezel and a highly domed vintage-style sapphire crystal. Its crown (positioned at 6 o'clock) is completely protected by the case when screwed down and is operable via a small tool that is used to screw, unscrew and set the time.

The Gauge V2.0 comes in two dial versions, one with a traditional 3 hands set and one with single a hand, which allows its user to tell the time in 5 minute steps. The watch houses a Swiss made ETA cal. The V2.0 now has an increased lug width of 24mm. Just 25 examples of each version have been made, a total 50 peices. OMEGA Seamaster DIVER Co-Axial 300M [NewGeneration]

By TLex The Seamaster DIVER 300M has been one of OMEGA’s most popular dive watches watches since it was first launched in 1957. Some 55 years on and this iconic diver been updated, upgraded and brought into the 21st Century, where it should gain as much of a following as it has in the past.

Four updated Seamaster 300M models are now available; all of them are equipped with OMEGA’s latest generation of revolutionary Co-Axial caliber 2500 mechanical movements. There are two 41mm versions of the Seamaster Diver 300m, and two with smaller 36.25mm stainless steel cases. Each of them are available with a choice of either blue or a black ceramic bezel inserts that have been designed to perfectly match their new glossy lacquered dials. An orange version wouldn’t have gone amiss, though. Their screwdown casebacks have been stamped with a large ‘Seamaster’ seahorse emblem.

The Seamaster Diver 300M is equipped with a number of professional divers’ features, such as; a manual-release helium escape valve, a unidirectional rotational divers bezel and tough scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Polished, facetted skeleton rhodium-plated hour and minute hands have been applied with SuperLumiNova as has the central second hand. The SuperLumiNova on the hour and second hands now fashionably emits a blue light as do the indexes. While the minute hand and 12 o’clock bezel marker have been applied with green SuperLumiNova for maximum efficiency when keeping track of dive-time.

Each of the new models are presented on a brushed and polished OMEGA patented screw-and-pin stainless steel bracelet with a divers' deployment clasp. And as its name suggests, the OMEGA Seamaster Diver Co-Axial 300m has a water-resistance to a depth of 30 bar / 300 meters / 1000 feet.

The OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M was the first dive watch that I considered almost 15yrs ago, when looking to buy my first really decent diver. It had been used by the British special forces, specifically the SBS and had been worn by Bond, and that was good enough for me. In the end, though I actually opted for a BREITLING to pacify my then obsession with extreme water-resistance. However my point is, as little as I knew about dive watches in those days, which wasn’t much at all, I did know that if I wanted a truly great Swiss diver other than a Submariner that there was only one other watch really worth considering, and that was the Seamaster 300M.

I applaud the new updates, who doesn’t like a ceramic bezel or blue lume, which are pretty much de rigueur for the modern divers watch anyway. And what's not to like about the new Cal. 2500?! The Seamaster 300M can now sit proudly alongside the new Planet Ocean collection, and as long as the price-tag hasn’t been ‘upgraded’ too much, these new version should continue the great Seamaster Diver 300M legacy . . .

LÜM-TEC 300M & MBRONZE

The automatic RADO divers, which are said to demonstrate a watertight style with reliable performance above and below sea level look pretty sensational. This is RADO's first new divers model in a number of years (not sure exactly how many, but it's been a while).

And this is RADO's first contemporary divers model to use an external rotational divers bezel. The D-Star 200 is available as either a 3 hand auto or a chrono. JIUSKO Deep Sea

By TLex Taiwanese factory brand, JIUSKO have a several divers in their line up. The Deep Sea was one that caught my eye; not only for its unique dual case design, but because it's basically the same watch as the DEEP BLUE Carbon Aqua.

The JIUSKO Deep Sea has a 46mm x 15mm Stainless steel case with a screwdown crown and caseback, a sapphire crystal and a water-resistance of 200m. It houses an automatic movement. I'm not really sure which one, though; could well be the Seiko NH25, which the DEEP BLUE Carbon Aqua uses. The JIUSKO Deep Sea's carbon dial comes in three colors; orange, black, blue or green.

I quite like the case design, crown, lugs bezel etc. But I'm not really digging the dial or the Aquagraph bezel insert. And the JIUSKO company slogan 'Yes, I Can' is a little - how can I say - sad! Nevertheless the JIUSKO Deep Sea's price tag, which should be sub 300 dollars means it's going to be pretty good value for large diver with a sapphire crystal and mechanical movement. This is going to make someone a nice beater.

By TLex I have just received these images from a friend of mine in Prato, Italy. They are of my new ENNEBI Fondale BRONZO Ref. 9680. The Fondale Bronzo is based on the regular Fondale, a watch that has garnered itself a bit of a cult following from dive watch aficionados. They even have a fan or two in Hollywood!

The sumptuous finish of the watch case has been achieved by a method of patinization, which gives it its warm dark tones. The new Fondale BRONZO further distinguishes itself from its predecessors because unlike them, it now features a new ENNEBI signed crown and a sapphire crystal. Thank you, Alessandro and Luciano, I can't wait for it to arrive!

By TLex 2011 has been another fantastic year for dive watches. We have seen some the most technically advanced, some the deepest, the most expensive and the most exotic divers models ever produced. Here are a few that stood out for me over the year, they are in no particular order . . .

Hi-END The release of OMEGA's new Planet Ocean family was not only of significance to the dive watch industry, but to the watch industry as a whole. I was lucky enough to get my hands on two of the new models, the PO Cal. 8500 and OMEGA's new flagship model, the Titanium Liquidmetal® Chrono, which houses their latest in-house movement, the Cal.9300

The Ball ENGINEER Hydrocarbon DeepQUEST is Ball's most technically advanced model to date. Its Titanium monobloc case boasts a water-resistance of 3000m.

ANONIMO Professionale C.N.S Although it's not a new model per-se, it was one of the dive watches released in 2011 that for me epitomized all that is great about dive watch design and engineering.

LUMINOX Deep Dive 1500 SERIES. A watch that can't be ignored, a milestone for LUMINOX and their most high-end model ever produced. I got to conduct an in-depth review of one.

HUBLOT King Power 48MM OCEANOGRAPHIC 4000. One of the deepest mechanical dive watches on the planet, but certainly not the prettiest, HUBLOT went for the over-designed, over-engineered look. Nevertheless a marvel of modern dive watch engineering.

BLANCPAIN X Fathoms After much hype and a lot of anticipation, the X Fathoms was unveiled. It may be the most technically advanced dive watch on the planet, but is it really a dive watch or just high-end mechanical dive computer?

BEST of the BOUTIQUES Newcomer H2O Watches have produced possibly one of if not the most customizable dive watch ever. Their base model the Kalmar has a water-resistance of 3000m, but was in fact tested to almost double that. H2O Watches continue to innovate with the use of exotic metals, such as Mokume Gane and Tungum.

ARMIDA's debut model the, A1 boasts an impressive highly domed crystal. The case design is original and it offers exceptional value for money.

BENARUS continue to do great things; not least of all was their special edition of the Megalodon III, the OceanicTime LE.

DAWN of the 2nd BRONZE AGE It would appear that there has been a bit of proliferation in the amount of bronze dive watches produced in 2011. Of those the PANERAI Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days BRONZO AKA PAM00382 has to be the most coveted. PANERAI made a couple of bronze prototypes in the early 80s, so in many ways pioneered the use of bronze in dive watch construction. Anonimo, who have a strong connection with PANERAI continued with that tradition as have ENNEBI with the Fondale BRONZO . . .

AQUADIVE Bathyscaphe 100 DLC

By TLex AQUADIVE's design objective for the Bathyscaphe 100 DLC was to create a modern classic; a watch with classic looks, but that used modern materials and had a modern spec. They took a vintage styled case and protected it with a high-tech scratch-resistant DLC coating and a state of the art scratch-resistant ceramic bezel insert.

Then they gave it a water-resistance of 1000m and equipped it with a Helium Escape Valve, which they discretely placed between the watch's lugs. The result, a dive watch that at first glance looks like it has stepped right out the 60s, but under further inspection has a finish and a spec. that is as modern and as cutting edge as anything else that is currently being produced in the dive watch industry today.

The Bathyscaphe 100 DLC has been teamed with a matching black rubber divers strap from ISOFRANE, itself another modern-classic. I can't help, but admire how the grain of the metal still shows below the DLC coating, it makes a lovely contrasts with the gloss black of the bezel grip and crown; really beautiful! CORUM A'C' Seafender 48 Chrono CENTRO 'Trophée Jules Verne'

UTS 4000 PROFESSIONAL FirstLook

By TLex The new UTS 4000 Professional may not be much of a departure from its sibling the UTS 3000M Dive Watch. The overall design of the watch hasn't really changed. It has the same basic case design that is fabricated from a solid block of German stainless steel by Nicolaus Spinner, the same bezel design and the same UTS trademark detachable lug design. It also incorporates all existing UTS technologies such as their proprietary bidirectional rotating bezel, which locks via a unique ceramic ball bearing system. It looks pretty much the same, too! Which is just fine with me, because, as the old saying goes 'if ain't broke, don't fix it'!

However, there was nothing about a little tweaking in that adage, nor of beefing up case size or increasing water-resistance. The new UTS 4000 Professional takes every thing up a notch or two. The case diameter gets a 2mm increase from 43mm to 45mm, the crystal thickness is increased by 1mm to 6mm; this allows for an increase of 1000m of water-resistance from 3000m to 4000m. Even the size of dial markers appear to have been beefed up, which should allow for a brighter lume application. Basically it's the watch I have been waiting for UTS to build for several years, now and it's finally here. Stay tuned for more . . .

OLIVIER Bronze DIVER

By TLex INTRODUCING the latest boutique dive watch brand, Olivier Watches with their debut model the OLIVIER Bronze DIVER. The OLIVIER Watch Co. was started (as many boutiques are) by a true watch enthusiast; one who had fallen for the charms of the ‘bronze diver’, but had become somewhat disillusioned by its price tag.

The founder of OLIVIER, who lives and works in LA as a designer soon realized that the only way that he was going to get the type of bronze diver with the spec. and looks that he wanted, and at a reasonable enough price was to produce it himself.

The OLIVIER Bronze DIVER is based on a classic cushion case design. It is constructed from CuSn8 Marine Grade Bronze, the alloy of choice by those wanting a material that has high structural strength and corrosion resistance to seawater, but that will also develop a lovely patina over time.

Its brushed bronze case measures 45mm in diameter with a thickness of 15.5mm. Its lug to lug measurement is just 48mm, which means that it will wear well even on smaller wrists; this was an important factor for its designer, who has a 6.5’’ wrist himself.

Further features include: a signed screwdown crown and engraved caseback and an automatic Helium Escape Valve. These components have been constructed from 316L Stainless steel, which allows for a nice contrast between the two different colors of the metal.

The watch has a 4mm thick Sapphire crystal (AR coating inside) and is thoughtfully supplied with two solid bronze 120-click divers bezels; one all-bronze with engraved markers and one with a black insert with white markers. The caseback of the Bronze DIVER depicts the scene of a shipwreck. Notice also the ‘los angeles’ text, cool touch! The case has a water-resistance of 500 meters.

The modern-vintage dial of the OLIVIER Bronze DIVER has been divided into four. I love the font used for the text and am surprised at how much I like the date indicator with its blue pointer. A set of bronze swords hands have been used, then there’s a nice pop of color from the blue of the second hand. Multi-layered Swiss C3 SuperLuminova has been applied to the dial markers, hands and 12hr bezel marker.

The watch will be offered with two mechanical movement versions; a Swiss made ETA 2824-2 priced at 850USD and a Japanese made Miyota 8215 priced at 650USD. It will be supplied with a 24mm rubber divers strap with a handmade bronze buckle. Some of the cast, which includes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Terry Crews can be seen wearing their 382s in the film. Back in October of this year, Terry Crews posted a short video blog from his trailer, whilst on the set of the movie, which was being filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria. He proudly shows of his new 'Pana-rani' to the camera!

LUMINOX Deep Dive 1500 SERIES Review

BACKGROUND LUMINOX are a Swiss watch brand specializing in rugged sports and military watches. Whilst their watches are Swiss made, they are known for their affordability and great value for money. LUMINOX watches have been chosen by a number of professional military teams such as the US Navy SEALs and the United States Coast Guard, whose members have been wearing them for more than 20 years now.

PACKAGING
The Deep Dive came in two boxes; an outer high-quality black cardboard box with a large embossed, shiny deep sea divers helmet and a Luminox logo along with some text in white: 'Deep Dive, 500 meters / 50bar, ISO 6425 Certified. An inner dry box of the type made by Pelican housed the watch along with its paperwork (warranty, instructions, certificate etc.) and a rubber divers extension strap. I like the fact that Luminox had put an actual metal name plate with their logo on the box rather than just slapping a sticker on it as most do. A fitting presentation, really.

AESTHETIC
The Deep Dive isn't going to win any awards as fashion accessory or an item of luxury horological jewelry. It has been designed with a real purpose in mind. There's none of this suede wannabe dive watch nonsense that we sometimes get with watches named ‘Deep Diver’ or ‘Abyss Diver’ that aren’t even fit for your bathtub! It actually is a dive watch and has been designed to be a utilitarian diving tool that if it had anything to say it would be: ‘take me diving’! On the other hand it isn’t too sore on the eyes either; if glossy black and lifeboat orange aren't already best mates they should be. The Deep Dive has the ultimate sleek and sporty color combo.

CASE
The case has a diameter of 44mm and thickness of 17.5mm; I don't think that's including the specialized crown protection and bezel locking devise though, which does add a little more to the watches' overall size. It has been constructed from 316L Stainless steel and then PVD coated in a black brushed finish. There's the ubiquitous HEV on its left lateral side; I like the fact that this has been highlighted by leaving it in steel, a nice detail.

BLS Both the crown and bezel are protected by a LUMINOX patent pending system that simultaneously locks the bezel in position whilst guarding the crown. The 'Bezel Locking System' or BLS prevents the bezel from being turned or accidentally bumped whilst on a dive. So what's wrong with a standard unidirectional divers bezel, I hear you ask?

To start with, bumping and moving the position of the bezel whilst being a distinct possibility isn’t that common (is it?); the worst that could happen if you did accidentally move the position of the bezel (for arguments sake, if you weren’t using a dive computer (why wouldn't you be?), or let’s say you were, but it crashed on you); is that your dive time would be cut short. This is the very reason why Luminox feel that, whilst not critical to live or death, having your dive time cut short is an annoyance that could and should be avoided. The BLS completely illuminates any chance of this ever happening.

USING the BLS couldn’t be simpler; it’s just a question lifting the latch to either adjust the crown or re-position the bezel, when you have finished you simply push the latch back down until you feel the reassuring click of the system locking.

BEZEL The bezel itself is a 60 click type, with 60 deep notches that have been cut into its outer edge. This gives a really nice grip. The action of the bezel is firm and deliberate, there is zero play. The bezel has an elapsed dive time scale marked out in five minute increments. The numerals have been painted on in silver. But I kind of think an engraved bezel would have looked better and would have been far more durable. At the 12 o’clock position there’s a large triangular silver marker with a small glass capsule containing a blue tritium tube.

CROWN The crown, which is signed with the Luminox logo is protected anyway as it’s a screwdown type with multiple gaskets, but it is further protected by the BLS, which doubles as a full closure crown guard.

CRYSTAL The Deep Dive has a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, so you get that lovely blue tint on the glass (see photos) that you get with some of the great Swiss divers from Breitling or Omega, and which is so attractive! Excuse the pun, but this also gives a crystal clear view on to the dial.

CASEBACK The Deep Dive has a slightly domed screwdown caseback. It has super cool deep-etched deep sea divers helmet in its middle. LOVE IT! Then there’s a ring of white text around the perimeter of the helmet engraving. The text includes specifications and serial numbers.

DIAL The Deep Dive has a stepped dial; the lower section is home to a lovely big Luminox logo and a load of text in orange. ‘PROFESSIONAL, 500 METERS, HELIUM VALVE, AUTOMATIC.’ In my opinion printing specification / features text on a the dial is a little unnecessary; firstly I feel it kind of insults my intelligence, I bought the watch for god’s sake, I know all of its features! OK, I mean if I had actually bought it, this one’s a loaner ;) but you know what I mean. But more importantly it crowds the dial and upsets the balance. Dive watch design 101, keep it clean!

The upper deck of the dial is where the hour markers are; big, bold lifeboat orange with tritium tubes in the middle of them. The minute hand is in white so that it contrasts against the orange and black of the dial. The hour and second hands are in orange. At 3 o’clock there’s a massive white date window; why couldn’t’ it have been black?! That would have been so much cooler.

LUME
The Deep Dive is illuminated by a total of 19 ‘Night Vision Tubes’. There are a 14 for the hour markers; three are used for the 12hr marker alone. The minute hand has two, then there’s one each for the hour hand and secondhand pointer. Finally the one already mentioned on the 12 o’clock bezel pip. Everything that is important to reading dive time; the minute hand, the 12 o’clock dial and bezel markers are in blue and the rest are in green.

LOVE HATE I have a love-hate relationship with Tritium Tubes, whilst they can burn for 25 years or so and don’t need any external light sources to charge them up, they don’t offer that satisfying bright glow that we get from say - C3 SuperLuminova. I have to say I find them a little boring. You really need to be in pitch blackness to fully appreciate them. However, I can’t very well argue with the all the modern military units, who seem to favor them over SuperLuminova. In my opinion, an optimum illumination system would consist of balance of both tubes and applied lume.

WATER-RESISTANCE
The Deep Dive has a water-resistance of 500 meters or 50ATM. 500 meters would in my opinion be the absolute minimum depth rating for any watch that called itself ‘Deep Dive’. I mean there are deep dives and there are deep dives. I don’t know why we couldn’t have at least had 1000meters. I guess LUMINOX deemed it unnecessary, which it is. But high depth ratings are cool, aren’t they? In the same way that torque and horse power is.

MOVEMENT
Swiss made ETA 2826-2 Automatic movement with hours, minutes, seconds and date function. I’m not a really a movement geek, but I think it’s pretty much like the 2824-2, but with a larger date wheel.

STRAP / BUCKLE
The Deep Dive has a lovely 26mm wide (tapering to 24mm) black rubber divers straps. The material used for its construction is silicone / polyurethane, which is both durable and comfortable to wear as it conforms nicely to the shape of your wrist. It’s a custom strap that fits flush against the middle of lugs, which incidentally are screwed. The underside of the strap has dozens of little LUMINOX icons that make up its grip. It’s a really nice strap.

BUCKLE The strap is attached to black PVD triple-pronged steel buckle. I love double prongs anyway; they look cool and are twice as secure, but triple prongs are even better!

FUNCTIONALITY
19 Tritium tubes, BLS for locking the bezel and protecting the crown, a unidirectional rotatable divers bezel with elapsed dive time, time, date, a water-resistance of 500m and a rubber divers strap with divers extension. ISO 6425 certified.

DURABILITY / BUILD
The watch I have is a very late prototype version; it’s pretty much the same as the production model. The build is superb, fit finish, everything is nice and tight, it fits together beautifully. Text, markers etc. are lovely and crisp. The PVD coating is nice and even. Great quality strap. High quality components such as Sapphire crystal and 316L Stainless steel have been used. This watch will take pretty much anything your average recreational diver could ever throw at it and more. The PVD coating will take a fair amount of abuse, but this is 2011 and everyone else is using DLC now, as it performs better. I’m not sure how the bezel markers will hold up over time either.

ISO The Deep Dive is ISO 6425 certified, which it means that it complies with a whole catalog of requirements that must be met to get its certification. It’s an added reassurance.

ON THE WRIST The Deep Dive wears very nicely, it sits well on the wrist. This is not a particularly big dive watch by today’s standards and because it’s on a rubber strap it’s not particularly heavy either. I couldn’t even say that the BLS interferes with your wrist as the actual latch sits up higher than the crown does. As already mentioned the strap’s super comfortable.

VALUE
The MSRP on the Deep Dive 1500 Series is circa 2’000USD. It’s a little high for a Luminox; I wouldn’t usually expect to pay so much for one of their watches. We’re almost talking Breitling or Omega money here! But the Deep Dive is LUMINOX's high-end diver with a Swiss mechanical movement and a sapphire crystal etc. The good news is that you should be able to pick one up for around 1600USD without breaking too much of a sweat from any of the online authorized vendors.

CONSIDER This is a tough one, I can’t think of anything that is comparable looks wise or spec. wise that is Swiss made. Take a look at the new MAT Watches, they don’t have tubes, but are really nice looking PVD divers with Mil spec. The same goes for the new RALF TECH WRX ‘A’ Auto, which is DLC coated. If you love tubes and are on a budget, check out DEEP BLUE Watches.

OVERALL
It looked cool in the first images I saw of it and it looked cool in person. But it was never going to the kind of watch that I would rush out and buy myself. However I was eventually won over by the Deep Dive’s honest approach to its design. Functionality seems to have played a far greater role than aesthetic have. I kept having to tell myself that it’s a dive watch. Unfortunately my perception of dive watches has become a little blurred with all the different styles that there are, so when an actual born ‘n’ bred diver was plonked in front of ,it took me a while to remember that dive watches were never actually meant to be about fashion or style. They’re instruments for measuring elapsed dive time, which the Deep does billiantl!

The LUMINOX Deep Dive is the utilitarian diving instrument; it does what is says on the box and more!

EXTático Rojo DIVER

By TLex The EXTático Rojo (red) DIVER is yet to have an official name, but is based on the current EXTatico DIVER project and will share a number of its core features, such as its case, crystal, lug and crown systems, vulcanized rubber strap and its 400 meters of water-resistance. It will also be made entirely in Spain. The watch will have a number new design elements, though, such as its cool notched bezel with rubber inserts (?) and its stepped dial. It will also house a higher caliber of movement, a Swiss made Soprod A 10. Price should be around the 4'000euro mark. Stay tuned for more . . .

Vintage VDB 2011 PVD Helsinki Edition

By TLex Only 15 pieces of the 2011 PVD Helsinki Edition have been made. Everything on the watch is as the regular 2011, only with a lovely dusky black PVD coating. The watch is dubbed Helsinki Edition after VDB partner and Finnish Professional Heavyweight Boxer, Robert Helenius, who has also had a special edition VDB handmade series made for him, named the NIGHTMARE. By TLex With 2012 just around the corner, the Vintage VDB 2012 is making its first appearance. The watch has a distinct military feel leaning more towards Italian with notes of Panerai and Anonimo, but with a twist Rolex vintage-mil. VDB have also encorported a number of design elements from their handmade models.

The case has some really nice features such as the massive '2012' lug engraving, the 12 o'clock top crown placement and the PAM Marina Militare / Submersible bezel design. It will be constructed 316L Stainless steel with a gray bead-blasted finish. It measure 46mm x 14mm with a lug to lug measurement of 53mm and 28mm screwed lugs.

The VDB 2012 has 60-click unidirectional divers bezel. Its markers with five minute increments. The screwdown crown is signed with the VDB logo. The screwdown caseback also carries a large VDB engraving along with the watch's LE# of 120 pieces. Once again VDB have gone for oversized shrouded lugs.

The Dial is in a muted brown with its hour-markers applied with yellow luminescent material and white surrounds. The handset will be in silver with a yellow chrome second hand. The VDB logo at 12 o'clock is in gray and a '2012' chili. The watch will have a water-resistance of 200 meters and will be powered by a NOS ETA 2837 caliber.

SCHOFIELD Signalman GMT PR

By TLex It's times like this, when watches (non dive watches that is) such as the Schofield Signalman come along that I wonder if I haven't limited myself somewhat in terms what I like to write about. It's true that the Signalman isn't a diver per se, but before you scroll down to the next story, take a look at what is in my opinion one of the nicest looking non-divers I've come across in a long while, and one that has a spec. that would put any number of actual divers models to shame.

Start up brand, Schofield was started by an Englishman with a passion for lighthouses. His debut model, the Signalman GMT PR has a nautical / mil vibe that will no doubt hit many of the right buttons with dive watch enthusiasts. It comes in either a DLC or mirror polish finished 44mm stainless steel case with a water-resistance 500m. Despite its chunky side profile the case thickness is in fact only 14mm. The large recessed crown has double gaskets. The screwdown caseback has been engraved with a lighthouse. The Sapphire crystal is domed with an anti-reflective coating on its inside.

The dial has dual levels; in many ways it resembles a divers inner rotational ring however it isn't. A cool font has been used for its applied numerals, which have been applied with Swiss C1 SuperLuminova. Other features of the dial include a GMT indicator and a power-reserve indicator at 12 o'clock. The movement, which is a Swiss made Soprod 9335 caliber is protected by an anti-magnetic movement holder. The watches are presented on 24mm sharkskin straps and are attached to the case via drilled lugs. A second half remborde military green canvas strap is also available.

By TLex ARICOSTE have a new diver planned for release in 2012. The name, Aricoste is a name that has been for many dive watch aficionados synonymous with the most famous name in scuba diving equipment, Spirotechnique, who today are known as Aqua Lung. Spirotechnique, who have also had an association with Doxa, Squale and Tag Heuer in past will again, put their name on the watch dial of an Aricoste diver.

The new Spirotechnique PROFESSIONNEL will come in two versions; one with a brushed steel finish and one with either a PVD or DLC treatment (I’m a not sure which at the moment). The brushed version has a dial layout with Arabic numerals, the black version with professional dial markers. The case, which is constructed from 316L Stainless steel measures a modest 42mm.

It has a rather unusual crown guard that extends down and out from the middle of the case and then drops all the way down to the bottom of the lug. This is somewhat reminiscent of the Rolex US Marine, a prototype diver built for US Marines in 1982, an incredible watch that never went into production, but that's another story.

Further features of the Spirotechnique PROFESSIONNEL include: a sapphire crystal, a Swiss automatic caliber (most likely an ETA 2824-2) and a water-resistance of 300m. The watches will be presented on NATO straps, but will come with others, possibly a bracelet. Stay tuned for more . . .

Herbert Nitsch, airline pilot and extreme record man, went down in history on June 14th 2007, off the Greek island of Spetses, by freediving to a depth of 700 feet (-214 m). This incredible feat put him way ahead of his nearest competitors and has yet to be superseded. Since then, he has kept right on pushing his limits. Closely linked with Breitling, “The Flying Fish” is currently engaged in the preparatory phase for his next record: freediving to 800 feet (-244 m), scheduled for summer 2012. To test his physique and nerves of steel, he has once again chosen the waters of the Aegean Sea, in the magnificent setting of the isle of Santorini.

The highly successful trials have provided the opportunity to check the performance of the “torpedo sled” facilitating the champion’s descent and ascent, complete with its underfoot ballast system, as well as the overhead inflatable buoy for bringing the diver back to the surface – all on a single breath. This is super high-tech and ultra-reliable equipment, exactly like the Breitling that partners his accomplishments.

Highly focused on safety, Herbert Nitsch intends to perfect his physical and mental training during the next few months, and finalize the development of the whole procedure of diving to the 800-foot threshold, before setting the “Breitling Extreme 800” record next year. All of which will bring him one step closer to his ultimate objective of breaking the legendary 1,000-foot (-305 m) barrier.

The KHB 'Commando Hubert' is a branch of the French Special Forces of the Marine National. The unit was set up by the Free French Forces in Great Britain alongside British Commandos during the Second World War and is named as such after Lieutenant Hubert Augustin, who was killed on D-Day during the Normandy landings.

The legendary unit of the 'Commando d'Action Sous-Marine' CASM 'Hubert', is the vanguard of the French Special Forces, who are deployed in the utmost secrecy on all continents and at the request of the Special Operations Command (SOC). It includes an operational company and a support company. The operational company is divided into four specific sections: Support, Maritime, Counter-Terrorism, Underwater Vehicles and Recon.

The Commandos who make up the operational company are all paratroopers and military frogmen. After a joint development with the technical staff of RALF TECH and then a year of testing at the heart of some of the most dangerous parts of the world, the men of the Commando Hubert adopted the WRX "A" to accompany them in all their combat missions.

The key points that brought about the selection of the WRX Hybrid® were:

By TLex Apart from having a name that is longer than it is big, the 41.2 x 12mm MGB Diver seems to be a nice alternative for those who have not taken to wearing larger dive watches. The case, which has a water-resistance of 1000m has been manufactured in Germany; I think it might well be an Ickler.

Ickler make Archimede, Limes and Autran & Viala, all with modestly sized divers models. Apart from its size (too small for me), there's quite a lot I do like about the watch. The case has a lovely hewn quality, the bezel is nice and chunky, the countdown markers are well proportioned. The dial, which comes in either black or blue is fairly minimal, apart from the flowery 'M' it works for me. Even a nice block-type handset.

The MGB Diver comes with all the usual specifications one would expect with an entry level German made mechanical diver; screw-down crown and caseback, Swiss SuperLuminova, a sapphire crystal with AR coating (inside) and of course the ubiquitous ETA 2824-2 automatic movement.

It is presented on a stainless steel bracelet with a divers safety clasp. The best bit, it's priced at just 499USD! The website actually states a discount of 67% down from 1'499USD. Whether or not that is a true 1000USD off is neither here nor there. The MGB Diver is very reasonably priced. If you can get past the scripted 'M' on the dial; it be could worth picking up!

By TLex The EXTático DIVER is a collaborative effort between the philosophical watch brand, EXTático, whose name symbolizes the detonation of time and the perception of movement, and micromechanics specialist, Moragas Technologie also of Spain, who are co-developing the DIVER with EXTático.

The first thing to say about this watch apart from the obvious amount of thought and attention to detail that has gone into it; is that the EXTático DIVER has not just been developed in Spain, but a number of its key components such the case, crown, bezel and hands have all been made in Spain.

The design of the watch whilst robust and functional is quite unlike anything else I have come across. It is futuristic yet evokes a feeling of deep sea exploration. Perhaps a diver for exploring the oceans of a distant planet?! There’s an exaggerated buzz-saw bezel, a laterally positioned lug attachment system and a massive custom rubber divers strap.

The watch looks like it would be most at home on the wrist of a scuba diver and probably not suitable for dress attire, but I would hazard a guess that EXTático had always indented that this dive watch unlike many others would actually fulfill its destiny as a diver, which would explain why the EXTático DIVER complies NIHS Swiss watch industry norms for divers watch.

Specifications include: a 316L Stainless steel case, a 120-click unidirectional rotational divers bezel, a water-resistance of 400m or 40ATM, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating (both sides), SuperLuminova applied hands and markers, a Swiss polished and engraved screwdown caseback, dual locking screwdown crown, a choice of two Swiss made mechanical movements; the ETA 2824 or an ESQUEMA ST 21 based caliber and a choice of two dials, a conventional printed dial or a specialized sintered dial.
